I use the bell jar style ones, and the way I make em last is to smear OMC Triple Guard or Pennzoil Marine grease on the contacts, and bulb bases. I do unplug since I am in salt water. The lights and housings actually last pretty long using the grease. I have drum brakes so unplugging is a non issue. BTW, even though lots of people say they don't last in salt, if you pack the area under the rubber boot in the wheel cylinder with grease, grease up the adjuster threads, and spray the backing plate with Boeshield, they do last a reasonable length of time. I feel that disc brakes, while they are easier to service, are still prone to sticking of the calipers and dragging brakes.
