I thought I would start a new thread to see if anyone has had any problems over the last year or so with the different brand trailer tires. For a while Goodyear Marathons were the tire to get but with tire manufacturers moving overseas has the quality improved or gotten worse. I want to change my tires this year but I'm confused after reading the old threads. GY, Carlyle, or what is the latest buzz??? If you are having major issues with your tires now let's hear about them. Thanks |

Carlisle tires have had lots of issues. Brother has a 2005 Rinker - lost 2 tires at 2 years old. He switched to marathons & has had no problems. Getting ready to replace my tires so interested to hear what else people are having good luck with. |

Mine are Carlisles - never had a hiccup with them so far and often travel 600 - 800 miles return trip at 60-70mph on some pretty crappy, pot-holed, narrow third rate roads (commonly called Highways here in Australia!).  IMHO I think the key to any trailer tire is to make sure the pressures are correct (55 psi on mine) and try not to clip too many curbs. Low pressure = more heat generated = increased chance of delamination = tire failure |

i agree with Alec. carlisle tyres, no probs. They want higher pressures though than the usual car tyres. |

Agreed with above... 5 years of carlyles on my last boat... 2 years so far on this one. Again, higher pressures. My trailer and car tires are inflated to about 5psi below max stamped on the tire (about 50 psi each). I find that gives me a little better milage (less rolling friction), without making the ride "hard". |

Had 2 Carlisle tire blow-outs in the past 3 weeks (only traveling at 30 mph each time). Switched to Towmaster tires as a result and have since taken a 2000-mile trip with no problems. |

Goodyear Marathons came on our trailer. They are holding up well, so far.

I've had just about everything with boats, snowmobile, race car, and other trailers. I've got Kumho's on this trailer and really like them. I like them better than Goodyear. I just wish I could get raised white letter tires for trailers like they used to make years back. |

FW, you might be interested to know that for the particular size and load rating (D) specified for your trailer, Marathons are still US-made. Check it out... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp? ... ageLocQty= Four years so far on Marathons with no problems. Some might point out that I don't tow that often (which is true unfortunately), but when I do it's for fairly long distances. |

Have had my go arounds with Carlisles over the years. Never again. Never had any problems with my GoodYear Marathons. And yes, I always ran the correct pressures. Good luck, KS. |

with 5 different trailers in the back yard, I have run many different brands. I have had good luck with GY marathons on old boat back in mid '80s, but did not work out on camp trailer 5 years ago. 10 years ago I did not like carlisle, but today, I am very much liking them, but I am running there new load range 'E', holding up very well. |

I have gone through 3 Carlyle tires in the past 2 years. The problem is the radial cords separate and cause a "bump" in the tire and if I don't see it while driving they blow out. Does anybody put their trailer on blocks taking the weight off the tires when stored for extended periods of time? Is it possible I am getting a weak spot in the tire because it sits with all the weight on it in one position? My boat is a 2004 200 horizon with dual axle trailer, tires only had about 4500 miles on them, stored trailer inside and tire pressure was 50 pounds. I can't figure out why the tires develop this cord bump. Thanks Jeff |

I think all manufacturers you will heard bad things. The original Carlisle tires are still on our trailer. Granted, the first 6 years of life it was towed about 50 miles a year. But in the two years I have had the boat they are still holding up. But of course I carry a spare. Jeff - my boat is not being used this summer due to twins born in May. I blocked my trailer last fall knowing it was going to sit for quite a while. Easy thing to do. Not sure it will make any difference or not. |

I blocked mine the first winter but haven't since. Seems like a lot of effort for no reason. If I was putting it up for longer than one off-season I'd do it, though. |
