The trailer on my 268 just has single axle brakes. I'd like to add them to the second axle. It looks like all the welded on pieces are there, I just need rotors/calipers/pads and new brake lines. Has anyone done this before? My previous boat, a 225 Sundowner, had brakes on both axles, and they were fantastic... |

Adding the brakes at the spindles is a simple process. Basically you remove the hub and replace it with caliper mounting bracket, caliper and a rotor. The hard part would be connecting the new calipers to the existing lines somehow. If you are lucky they have left off plugged provisions that you can attach to. The whole process is easy it just will take a while to assemble all the necessary parts. What you need is an exploded view so you can make sure and have all the components before you start disassembly and re-assembly. But never mind thinking about the brakes right now....Get that baby in the water and enjoy her. You can alwayswork on the brakes while she's in the slip. |

I thought he was! He could always get her in for a week somewhere though. I guess I should have thought differently when he mentioned weight distributing hitch elsewhere.... Durango towing a 278 regularly  He is nuts isn't he

Hey now! I can get her some where for a week no problem. Wife and I have already talked, if its that bad, we'll just slip it. Right now I need to get it on the trailer right, its back 6" from the bow stop because they couldn't get it loaded right in AL. Anyone with brake advice? |

Yeah...a 268 is a fairly big boat and it should probably have brakes on both axles. (I'm going to put 4 wheel brakes o mine and it only weighs about 5000lbs.....I'm going to remove the surge brakes and go to electric brakes though) Go to the following link. I think for sure a boat that size needs brakes on both axles...if you tow mostly in flat areas surge brakes are OK...if you have a lot of steep hills electric over hydraulic would be best but most expensive and complex....I'd find out what brand of brakes are used on the front axle and try to get another set of those to install....this is actually a pretty easy job and instructions can be found on http://www.championtrailers.com I put in a simple surge drum system...got the axle made by them with brake flange and just installed their drum brake kit. Back then (5 years ago) disc brakes were kind of new and having problems with sticking and dragging so I went drum but now I'd go with Kodiak discs. |

You might check your "non-brake" axle. My rear axle (the one with no brakes) doesn't have flanges on it.........so I'll either have to weld them on or replace it with an axle that does or I won't have anywhere to mount the brake backing plates. |

You should have no problem adding an additional axle of brakes! You might even consider switching to Electric over hydraulic brakes. |

I added the second axle brakes to my 268 Vista trailer with Kodiak brake parts from Easternmarine.com Looks just like the factory installed set. Not to hard to install. KS |
