Hi all...

Seen some good threads about what's good and bad about our FW trailers, and a little on the ubolts and springs.....mine are awfully rusty at this point --- any way to judge if it's "ok" or time to just "replace springs and bolts entirely?"....

Rust on the rest of the trailer is "here and there"...nothing is rusted "through," and mostly is just on things like the safety hooks...but the rust on the leaf springs concerns me.

This is the first year we have kept the boat in the water in a slip for lengthy periods, so I've had more time to notice...

Ernie

If your trailer is the same age as boat in sig, I think your overly concerned about nothing! Yes you will see rust color on springs, think of it as a protective layer of oxidization to keep it from really corroding away.

There are many RVs on the road with leaf springs/u-bolt that see salty roads that are 10-15 or even more, years old still performing.

Of course, if you are seeing bolt corroding away, replace!

Thanks powelcrazy.... I'll be keeping a closer eye on it, but on second look, it's just rust, not anything deeper.....

Clean them up as best you can & hit'em with What ever color you please Rustoleum. That $hit stops the rust for a good while "It's the Fish Oil" If you don't want to paint them after you clean them hit W/LPS3, TriFlow or PJ1 Chain lube I also like AFC50 excellent overall anti corrosion spray. Zinc Chromate Paint is another way to go.

Anytime a u-bolt has pits in it then it might be time to consider some new u-bolts.....your local spring shop can make them for you or you can probably order new ones online.....

I just replaced mine in April 09, due to one being broken when I bought mine! However my boat is 20 years old...

I would not worry about it too much, unless you are a salt water boater...Ill let the salty's make some recommendations...
