We were starting to hi-jack another topic so I'm starting a new one. When is it time to change the bunk carpet? When is it time to change the wood? Besides the obvious. Which carpet is best? Which wood is the best to use - plain treated lumber? Staple size and grade? viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4404&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15 Thanks |

I sort of go with the obvious. When they get loose, its time to at least check the hardware...possibly change the wood. As far as carpet goes...when it starts to get thin. At the tail end of last season, my 2008 trailer bunks were just starting to get REAL thin in a couple places. For some reason, my boat chines are real rough on my bunks. Well..my buddy who works at Roadrunner Trailer agreed that the wood is in perfect condition...no need to replace...We ended up just putting new carpet OVER my existing carpet to give it extra protection. |

aguyindallas - I like the idea of just putting new carpet over the old. I just have some area's that are getting thin (no holes) and the wood seems solid. Thanks for the idea! |

I just did my bunks a couple of months ago. I replaced all the wood with pressure-treated, structural 2x6 lumber from Home Depot. I used SS staples and replaced all the carriage bolts with new galvanized 1/2" bolts and elastic stop nuts. (You must counter-bore the wood so the carriage bolt heads don't protrude above the surface of the wood. I counter-bored to allow at least 1/4 inch lower than the surface. The carpet is "Bunk Carpet" I got from Boaters World (before they went out of business) Regards, Rick |

I ordered teflon strips from Overtons. Still waiting for them to get delivered. I had originally thought of re-carpeting over the old too, but I read that the increased bulk will retain water longer and therefore will rot the wood and hardware sooner. Has anyone seen stainless steel carriage bolts? |

I didn't even think about Arrow staples. I was looking for SS for pneumatics. Thanks! (Oh, and +1 on the Home Despot comment.) |

Just redid some trailer bunks. There are several dealers on ebay that sell carpet cut in strips for that purpose in various colors. Also found SS staples on ebay. Take the old carpet off. It just retains more water and you can check the condition of the wood. Used a hand grinder to grind off the old staples instead of pulling them. Used SS lag screws to fasten back on on or you can use galvanized lags. |
