Post subject:  surge brake system overhaul?

looks like i need to rebuild my surge brake system from the actuator back.

are their any kits that have all the galvanized hydraulic lines and flexible hoses to the brakes that anyone knows of. its a 1996 240 Horizon trailer. I figure im just gonna rip into it this spring and
paint it re-do the lights, brakes and hydraulic system in a week.

ive been looking on trailer parts superstore kit #Kit #0539-004 but i have the trailer wintered up at a storage lot so im not sure if this would work.

any help would be great....

Go to your local auto parts store they should be able to get everything you need. Take the brake shoe assembly with you and they can match it up. Any hydralic place can make up the hoses for you.

You can also buy complete kits from http://www.championtrailers.com who have a complete single axle kit with stainless lines or http://www.tiedown.com who have a complete single axle kit with fexible lines

Both Champion Trailers (check their website they have good tech articles) and Eastern Marine are very good sources of trailer brake systems. I bought a surge drum system from Champion back in 04 for my old 94 Load Rite and it was pretty easy to install and worked well. I did not go with discs then because the available disc systems were troublesome...now I'd probably go Kodiak but with this one I'll just keep it drums as the trailer does not get dunked that much so the brake system holds up pretty well....

+1 on Champion or Eastern, if I were doing this I'd go with either Kodiak or Tie Down disks with flexible lines and a 5-wire system with reverse lockout (requires a new actuator). Tie Down makes a nice kit with everything included; a lot of people don't like Tie Down but I've been completely happy with them and customer support has been excellent.

As to lights, go all LED and don't look back.

+1 Mike. I think the Tiedown stuff is pretty good quailty and reasonably priced.

Yep definately get the reverse lockout and LED lights. Also attach the brake lines to the axle with cable ties (zip locks?) instead of those stick-on pads that always fall off.

+ 1 on champion trailers (I've used them alot and they haven't let me down yet). The boat I bought the PO had replaced the actuator with one for drum brakes (my trailer has disc), Thanks to champions web site pages I learned how to "modify" the actuator for disc brakes (saved me 100+ bucks over replacing a brand new piece).
