We have a '07 tahoe with 4.10 rear end gear ratio and the 5.3L motor. Though it is rated for 8500lbs, I do not like towing more than 5k with it. But that is just me.

This is our 5th tahoe, 1st being a '97 with 5.7L motor, 3.73 rear end. All of them being 4X4.
We had towed our '95 245 sundowner with the first tahoe, it did ok.
The latest generation has greatly improved the chassis and it tows/haul 5k much better vs. the older versions.
Now for the little 5.3L motor, I am not a big fan of it for a towing much. Granted I tow in the mountains vs where most of you guys tow near sea level, which make a difference. It is a fine motor to haul the base vehicle around, but when you put that much weight behind it..........

07H200SS, if your going to wait for a bit to save money, do your self a favor and save that little bit more and get the 2500, when your towing 5k with the family the 2500 platform handles the weight much nicer, especially in panic situations, will have heavier trans, brakes, and suspension for a longer lasting tow vehicle. While the little half tons 'can' do it, it seems to stress to the limits and at times is a white knuckle drive.

I personally tow with a 1 ton crew cab long bed, but once a year we will tow the jeep on a car hauler trailer with 1/2 ton tahoe (which is very closely related to the 1/2 trucks of GMs) and yes it does it, but I sure dont like as well vs a 3/4 or 1 ton ride.

Good luck with your search, my next truck will also be a GM crew cab. Really like the GM interior vs the ford or dodge. I am now getting to the age that I could care less about looks of the vehicle and want comfort while on the long drives. Heated and A/C seats, XM radio, and smoothest 1 ton ride, IMO. 8)

OK heres what I get for looking anyway. I found a 2003 1500HD with the 6.0L Vortec engine that we are discussing an even trade for my wives car. Only one problem is the truck has 195,000 miles on it. Anyone know much about the 6.0L Vortec and how long they can be expected to last? I normally am not one to buy a higher mileage vehicle, but this one just happens to have all the options I am looking for in a truck and would cost me nothing out of pocket to get into it.

195,000 miles ...man that seems like a lot, well for me at least. I have never owned a with more than 85,000 miles let alone 195,000 on it. What other issues/costs might you run into with a vehicle with that type of mileage?

Not sure?! My TB has 114,000 miles on it and that is the most I have ever had on any of my vehicles to other than beaters when I was a kid. This truck would be mainly used as a local vehicle to go to and from work and also hauling the boat. Maybe the occasional trip upnorth a few times a year nt hauling the boat. Just going up to the hunting land.

I guess my only main concearns would be the drivetrain itself. If the engine, trans, transfer case, and axles are in good condition the rest is minor work I can do myself. Heck I have even replaced engines before, but don't want a money pit either.

Heres a picture they sent me.

I'd pass that by personally. Even if the engine & tranny have been impeccably maintained (in which case they might be good for another 75K), the body, interior, accessories, etc. are going to start falling apart very soon if they haven't already. If all you want is a mule though and don't care about anything but towing, it might be alright.

Mike is likely correct, but if you really like it, why not have it checked out by a mechanic? 195,000 miles is a lot, but they should be able to do a compression check on the engine and possibly check the tranny to give you some idea of the trucks mechanical condition.

Good idea. Can try and make that part of the deal if I decide to persue it.

Who has one and how does it tow your boat? I was looking for a 2500, but can't seem to find one in my area for a good price. Well at least not for what I am looking for. Looking for a newer tow vehicle for under 10K and have a lot of choices on 1500 trucks. Also wife thinks we need a 4-door (need to put two car seats in back) while I am good with an extended cab. I did find a 1500HD in my price range, but concearned with the miles on it (166,000) and it is in Grand Rapids Mich. so its a long drive for me to just go look at it.

I have a 97 Chevy 1500 2wd with the 5.7 Vortec. Ive been very happy with it. As far as the miles go, 170000 is not a lot as far as the motor is concerned, but the transmissions in these trucks seems to not make it past around 140000. This obviously isnt true for all of them, but it was for me. I replaced the tranny in mine at 130,000 and since then I have had no complaints. Ive towed a 5000 pound truck on a 1200 pound trailer and it was fine. Just dont drive like a madman.
