I've been thinking of trading up to a bigger truck to make towing my 268 easier.

According to the Dodge towing site, Dodge Tow Ratings , my Durango is rated to tow 8700lbs, with a GCWR of 14000lbs.

I'm looking at an 06-07 Ram 2500. According to that website and the axle ratios, they are only rated to tow 8750-10750lbs, with a GCWR of 15000-17000lbs.

My Durango has 95k trouble free miles on it, and brand new tires that I put on last fall. I told the admiral it was time for a new truck since it needs new tires (I've never put a full new set of tires on a vehicle), but she had me put tires on it.

Do it. Go diesel!

I wish. To get a diesel at the price point I want, with these newer models, is either 98k or 131k miles. The 131k miles is a nice, clean looking truck, that matches the 268. But 131k on an '07? Ignition was never shut off!

That diesel is just getting broken in at those miles.

My only issue is the rest of the truck, the truck looks great, but what about the trans/front end?

I was wondering how your durango did with the boat, at an 8700# rating, you are definitely pushing it. I tried the same thing with a 1500 suburban. it had a 7200# rating. It would do it, but not very well and I felt something was going to fail on it it every time i pulled the boat with it, so I went diesel

What are your thoughts on that diesel I posted Jeff? That blue one is the exact truck I want, spray in and all. Only issue is the high miles. I found a gas '06 near me, looks the same, with 28k miles for 20k.

Joe,
Go with the gasser.... You can replace the whole motor for the price of an injector pump rebuild!
Diesels are not practical unless you are pulling constantly or are going to put lots of miles on them. The cost differences will never work out to your benefit. Don't get me wrong I would love to have a diesel for the extra pulling strength, noise and all the other 'man' reasons we all dream of but economically they do not make sense.

28K miles on an '06 doesn't sound like alot....not sure if that's a good $ though.

Thanks. I'm not sure I can swallow spending over $20k on a truck with 131k miles on it. Sure the motor will last forever, but what about the rest of the truck. This will also be my daily driver to and from work, not just towing the boat on the weekends.

Joe,

Sorry man I got nothin to offer on the truck. I don't know much about Dodge. I do understand the argument of never getting the payback out of a diesel. Especially with diesel price on the rise again, @ 2.85 here at last check But... the same argument can be made for even owning a boat cant it?

Check it out and go with your gut... just like you did with your 268.

Gas is that much down here as well. Its neck and neck with diesel.

I wish checking out that 131k mile truck was as easy as my boat, but its down in Texas.

I'm looking at an '06 tomorrow with 28k miles, but he is the second owner and has only had it since July 2009. There's an '07 near Detroit at a dealer with 67k. Bought new there and traded there, one owner. I feel a lot more comfortable about that one, but I'll know more when I see the one tomorrow.

'06 28k miles, HEMI power wins.

The Cummins with 130K miles may be just getting broke in, but the rest of it is a Dodge truck with 130K miles on it. Some will disagree, and it does look nice, but I'd pass personally.

I am a huge diesel fan, but I dont recomend buying a vehicle with high miles for a family car or tow vehicle. Too many issues when they get that old, sure the motor will go 300k, but when something else goes south on your way to the lake, sure is a bummer that ruined your boating trip.

For towing the vista, nothing less than a heavy duty 3/4 ton or larger is what I would recommend with the largest motor you can afford to own. They are heavy boats.

Sure many get away with less, but is it worth it???

Very true.

As stated, '06 2500 28k miles, HEMI wins. I'll put up some pics when the deal is completed....
