I know this has been somewhat discussed before, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. I am wanting to add the plastic covers or bras over my standard FW trailer bearing hubs to stop the excess grease from flying out and getting on everything. The hub measures 2.5 inches in diameter. Does anyone know the size I need for the cover. 1.98 sounds like it is pretty standard, but it is very unclear to me if that is what I need. Thanks!

Grease is flying out the fronts of your hubs? I'd recommend fixing that as opposed to covering it. I might be misunderstanding. Do you have the rubber caps installed and are they in good shape?

That may be the problem. I have the rubber caps installed, but on the starboard side they don't seem to be in the best shape (I just bought the boat in November). I think he had just greased them before he towed it to me--so it may be that he went a bit wild with the grease gun.

I discovered that the rubber caps from my local trailer shop were a noticeably tighter fit than the originals were, even though they were the same nominal size. The originals always seemed almost loose; the ones I have now feel like they "fit." You might want to take the caps off, see if there's a ton of extra grease in there, and if so, pull the cap off and scoop off all the unneeded extra.

You're welcome. It's worth exactly what you paid for it. :D

I don't know if the newer one's are the same but be carefull about the inside edge of the metal cap where the rubber plug fits into. I was cleaning the old grease out without removing the cap and got a nasty gash in my finger because the edge is very, very sharp.

I had half a roll of paper towels with grease and blood all over by the time I was done. Not a pretty site. And my finger still hurts!

They're still like that as of '05 and I have a scar to prove it. ;)
