Post subject:  Tongue height

I am anxiously waiting for Thursday to get here(Haven't felt like this since I was a kid waiting for Christmas!). I am looking to see if anyone knows the trailer height at the tongue, so I can figure out what drop hitch/ball I need. Oh, the boat is a 99 horizon 200. The dealer told me to get a 1" drop, but to me, it just doesn't seem right. I am towing with a stock(unlifted) Toyota 4runner. I tow jetskis, but with those, the tongue of the trailer is higher than my hitch, so the assembly I use to tow them with, has a 2" lift. It just doesn't seem right that the boat tongue would be that much lower than my jetski trailer.

Hope this wasn't too confusing. Thanks for your help in advance.

P.S. Will have pictures posted as soon as I take delivery. I notice that pictures are a must on this forum.

no one can tell you exactly the right lift or drop. It's dependant on your towing vehicle and where your hitch is as well as your boat. The best way to find which rise or drop you need is to park you tow vehicle infront of your boat trailer on a level surface. now use the jack to level out the trailer and now you can use a measuring tape or eyeing it to see if you need a lift or drop and by how much. I would recomment having your tongue of the trailer slightly on a higher slope just because you never know how much your springs on your tow vehicle will compress when you load all your passengers and equipment. Too high your tongue will bottom out the tongue on a slope and too high your tail end of your trailer might scrap when leaving parking lot ramps and such. So try to keep it as horizontal as you can. I have two different types of ball mounts. 1 is not adjustable which i use for my four winns trailer cause it's the perfect height and the 2nd is an adjustable one for all my other towing needs. If you're not sure you can always spend a little more money and buy an adjustable ball mount. Just be familiar with the way the adjustable one works and how it locks into place (VERY IMPORTANT).

What you really need to know is the height of the coupler when the trailer is loaded and sitting level. From there, add 2" to account for vehicle sag, and that should get you pretty close.

Thanks guys!
I think I will go up to the dealer and measure myself. I am familiar with the adjustable hitches, as my father has one to tow his RV Trailer. I will probably go with the adjustable, as it will allow me to hone in the perfect tow angle.

Please remember you do not want the trailer at an angle, you want it level when towing down the road for proper surge brake operation along with proper handling characteristics.

Usually 18inch to the top of the ball.
