Post subject:  Torque Wrench
I was wondering how people are checking the torque on their trailers and hitch ball? I know a torque wrench is usually the best bet but some figures I keep seeing is to have some 2" hitch ball with a 1 1/4 shank torqued to 450lbs? :?

So...I guess my main question...What is everyone using and recommend and what are your ratings?

Take ball and hitch to U-Haul. They can properly torque it down. Lug nuts should be done with a good torque wrench. I recommend Craftsman. I had one break that I bought in High School in 1967, took it back to Sears last year and they gave me a new one!!!!!

Hitch ball - When I first installed it, I used a breakover bar and tightened it with all the strength I had. Since then I've bought a 1/2" impact wrench and will tighten it again with that before this season starts.

Lug nuts - I don't take the boat anywhere without a 1/2" torque wrench in the truck. Four Winns told me to use 85 lb-ft. on dry studs, and 65 lb-ft if I'm using anti-seize (which I am). I re-check them at least once per trip at the beginning and sometimes check them again before returning home depending on distances traveled, etc.

just be sure to have a spare tire and a $15 4 ton hydrolic jack from walmart....you will thank me later.

Thanks guys. Maybe we should try to put a sticky together of needed tools that people have put in their towing/boating tool box?

Just a thought...being the new guy and all, you guys can shoot it down!

Nah, it's a great thought - but it's been done numerous times. Without exception, the list ends up being 3 pages long and it becomes difficult to tell what's really needed and what's overkill - because when you really think about all the risks associated with towing, you'll probably decide to overkill it :D .

As to that jack, yeah - I'd be interested in knowing how many trailer boaters have their trucks packed with tools to handle every conceivable problem - but have never verified whether their truck jack will work on their trailer :roll: .

Well it was a thought, sometimes I have good ones, other times...well! :lol:

Owning a boat has become a great reason to have to go to Lowes and get new tools. One for the boat and one for the house...thats what I keep telling my wife!

So far she is buying it, we shall see when the bill comes :roll:
