Post subject:  Pretty off topic - electric brake controller

My poor truck. When I bought it new 13 years ago I had no intention of towing anything with it. I got the tow package only because it included parts that I think every vehicle ought to have (transmission cooler, bigger radiator, etc.). Little did I know that 8 years later I'd ask it to start towing a boat near the top of it's published capacity.

Now I've got twin boys, both fairly serious musicians, getting into their first year of high school - and marching band. And that means another "opportunity" to help out as a "band dad" - yep, by being on the equipment team and towing one of the band trailers. The band has a pair of 20' enclosed utility trailers weighing about 5,300# empty and about 6,700# loaded, and they have electric brakes. Since my truck isn't one of the new 1/2 tons with a 10,000# capacity with $800/month payments, I had to add a brake controller. I bought a Tekonsha P3 and am very impressed with it. One problem with the '97-'04 F150 body style is that everything is rounded, inside and out, and there's just no good place to mount a controller on the dash.

As an amateur radio operator I have a mobile VHF/UHF transceiver mounted on the transmission hump on a self-made pedestal. I decided to just add a "wing" onto it for the controller. Works great!

Just thought I'd throw this out on the board in case anyone ever needs an idea for mounting stuff in their truck.

That's a pretty sweet setup! I like the creative things people do. I kind of expected paint on those brackets though?

:) Actually I did intend to come back later and paint the pedestal. You know how "later" works.

Looks good mike.. How about covering with OEM style carpet?... You should be able to get a small material from JC Whitney or other typical auto mail order place.

When I saw the topic, I thought you were going to ask which brake controller to get....but you already did your research and got the best one out there :) I love my prodigy...pretty much set it and forget it. On my explorer, I mounted mine on the plastic above the gas pedal. Fortunately, the prodigy can work up to 70 deg off angle, so it was a perfect place. I picked up one of the cables specific for the ford...just had to fish it from behind my glove box across to the driver side. I like your placement though, much easier to see. I like the carpet idea...would make for a very clean finish. Great choice and nice work!

Thanks for the nice comments. Electric brakes are a new experience and they're quickly growing on me. Next for my frankenpedestal, I'm going to mount one of these as a 12V distribution panel:

But I'm not sure yet whether it'll go along the bottom of the front, or vertically up the passenger side. Once that's done, I might just carpet it.

I upgraded to the Tekonsha P3 last year, absolutely love it. Does a great job, our 5th weights in around 12,000 and then 2,000 in jet skis behind that.

Controller is very smooth. There are better controllers out there, but they cost $400ish.
