Hi,

My name is Brad and I just recently purchased an 89 Freedom 160 with and OMC 3.0 and cobra outdrive. Boat is excellent for it's age except the block is cracked. I'm having trouble finding a rebuilt short block without breaking the bank. What I am finding is that a replacement 3.0 and a 4.3 are almost the same price. Was the 4.3 an option in this boat? How hard would the swap be if it's possible? I've worked on my share of automotive engines but never really got into marine engines. Any help will be very appreciated.

If you look here in the 1988 Freedom 160 specs. It only lists the 3.0L 4 banger as the largest I/O. So I would not want to shoe horn a V6 in that boat, even though it might fit, it would take some modifications.

Looks like a crate engine or used complete engine is your only choices.

I appreciate the advice. I actually found a complete motor locally for $400.00 and I'm very excited to pick it up today and have them swapped by the end of the weekend.

I think you're better off keeping the 3.0, to swap in a 4.3 (assuming it will even fit) you'd have to fab up new front motor mounts, and the outdrive gear ratio would be off for a 4.3. In addition, you'd have to swap the Y pipe and the whole exhaust system, it's all different from the inline 4 to the V-6.....then there's the carb, fuel pump, alt, circulating pump, etc those are all different...when you add it up, it's a lot to get back on the water...

I thought of dropping a 5.7 in my boat if I ever repower it, but it's the same issue on a lesser scale, but the engine mounts are already big enough to accomodate the longer V-8. Still the drive ratio is not optimal, and again the whole exhaust system is different. I might just stick with the 4.3 4bbl Q-jet, it's a very economical engine good for today's fuel prices....
