Post subject:  Kill Switch Wiring ?

As I mentioned in a different post, my dealer by passed my kill switch and messed up the wirring under the dash of my '88 160 Freedom.

How is that kill switch supposed to be wired ? I found a replacement one that has both normally open and normally closed circuit.

Which one do I use ? And how to wire it ?

You need a marine electrician.

It is basically just a contact. Mine is wired normally open and when the button is depressed is becomes closed. Do you know which wires were on it to begin with? The button on mine stays depressed when the lanyard is on it allowing voltage to travel through.

That's how I figured it should be. But it doesn't kill the engine when I did it.

Looking at the wiring in my boat and I see the mechanic did a few by passes...

Give us some info on your boat and motor, there are alot of resources on the web. Do you have an owners manual? wiring diagrams are in the back of it sometimes w color codes.

Hi Rick,

I have the Seloc Manual and found a few wiring diagram.

1988 Cobra with the GM 3.0l.

Currently the Purple cable from the key switch is (re)wired directly to the coil instead of going to the alternator. The Purple/Red cable from the alternator to the coil was cut. That also means I'm by passing the resistor wire and the coil is getting nearly full voltage.

So adding the kill switch in a normally closed should be the way it was original but with the above mentioned modification, it doesn't do anything.

The boat is going back the the dealer this Tuesday. When I mentioned the by-passed kill switch from their last work on the boat, the parts guys' jaw dropped and immediately made time for me. They'll fix the wiring as the boat should never have been left like that (by them).

Here is what was done to the harness.

I'm not sure yet how it could run at all...
