Why does the drive need to be down?

Is it a mechanical issue? Just got a Liberator, and I need to know these things so I don't break anything.

Whenever the engine is running, the driveshaft through to the outdrive is turning. This means that the gimbal bearing and the u-joint set are turning. With the drive up at the high angle, the bearing and the u-joints are being stressed.
