Hello everyone I have a 1988 160 freedom with a 90hp johnson and 262 hours, that has developed a strange electrical problem. Now I always run the motor every two weeks wether I can take it to the lake or not but his time when i tried to start it nothing happened. When I turn the ignition key nothing happens, the gauges dont move the starter doesnt engage, NOTHING even the lights and trim adjustment done work. I tried different batteries and checked all the fuses but still nothing. I have no idea why this happened or what to do. Please give me some ideas and help me as best you can. Because I cant even raise the motor to take it to get looked at.

Thank you -Mike

I would start by checking the safety lanyard and make sure it is in place.
If that is ok and your positive it is not battery than i would get a voltmeter and check the ignition switch.
If that all checks out check your grounds.

Just like the other Walt says... check the batt and work from there. I would first remove the battery leads and clean the posts, as well as checking any other electrical connections for signs of oxidation (esp those grounds!). That has shown up a few times. It can fool you by showing voltage everywhere you check, but too much corrosion to carry any current.

I will check the ignition. but even if it does not work it still would not explain why the lights and motor trim dont work. by the way where are all the grounds located?

Follow your battery neg (-) to the next terminal block. That should be where all your grounds come together. Look for signs of oxidation, or loose/missing connections. Anything loose needs fixed. Do the same with the pos (+). Same thing. Both are probably near the helm. Check your voltages at each point along the way.

If you check and clean your grounds as we have suggested and your batteries are good and your ignition circuit is still dead then you should go and check your main harness 10 pin plug. But first thing first.

Good Battery?
Safety Lanyard in place?
Clean grounds?

Post back with your results and we will help you solve this. Good Luck.
