Greetings! I am looking at purchasing a 1989 170 this weekend and want to know some things to look for. I read somewhere that these were notorious for rot? The engine is an 2.3 liter Ford I think he said with an OMC drive if that makes sense. Price is reasonable at $2000?

Thanks!

Mike

I would pass on that one, a boat that age
with carpet over a plywood deck is likely to have rot. And that Ford Omc combination can be hard to get parts and service for.

I bought a 1988 Candia 180 and what looked like a small soft spot turned into a complete transom/stringer/floor job. I was dumb enough to do the work myself, but it was a big job.

I wouldn't buy the boat unless I knew the integrity of the floor/stringers/transom. If you are so inclined, you may be up for a project. If suspect these issues, drop the price 3-4k before considering it. I have about $1500 just in supplies... and to have it done by a pro would have cost me about 3-4k.
