im taking on water and the bilge is filling pretty quick. it appears to be leaking between transom and outdrive. has anyone had any success using a sealant to cure this problem other than tightening up the out drive bolts????

Are you sure it's not leaking from the bellows?

not leaking from bellow... bilge was slightly full so i waited to unscrew the drain plug and see if i could see it leaking back out. sure enough we saw it dripping from bottom right corner. i then pulled the plug :(

Merc or OMC? IF its not the bellows and its an OMC I would say more likely the transom seal is bad, often times tightening the bolts will snug it up unless the transom is too rotted. If its a merc could be the same thing OR the upper pivot pin and the water is working its way down between the inner and outer place before you see it.

OMC......gonna try to tighten up the bolts, seal the outdrive all the way around with 4200 and see if that works.

I would not bother with the 4200, for one thing it will not really seal because the transom seal is inboard of that outside edge and for another, it will make a mess to remove if you do have to pull the motor to replace the transom seal. Just tighten the bolts and keep fingers crossed....

Tighten the bolts and fill the bilge with water to make sure you have sealed it before you put it back in the water. It will save you alot of time and effort.

I just had the same problem and I have a 1989 Freedom 170. Took it to get checked out and it turned out to be that the wood between the fiberglass is rotted and needs to be replaced. Since my boat is in excellent overall shape otherwise, she is currently having the work done, which entails taking off the engine, taking out the interior fiberglass, replacing the wood, internal fiberglass and then putting everything back together again. She should be ready today or tomorrow.
When I spoke to the guy doing the work, he told me that this was his 7th estimate for the same problem with stern drive boats built between 1987-1990. Not specifically Four Winns boats, but stern drives from those years.

On thing to ask them is did they seal the cut out for the drive with resin and 'glass, often when boats are built the whole transom is 'glassed and then the cutout is done, but if they do not seal that wood, a bit of water leaking in around the transom seal can cause the transom to rot. Same with the screws that hold in the garboard drain plug and the speedo pick up as well as depthfinder transducer mounts. All penetrations in the transom must be sealed.

BTW, you hear a lot on here about how bad salt water is for boats, well it is, but salt water does not rot wood like freshwater. The bacteria that actually cause rot do not live in salt water. Of course it rusts any metal except the most noble.

sorry for taking so long to reply but yes applying 4200 in the gap around the outdrive and then tightening the outdrive bolts worked like a charm. no more water

Sorry for bringing up a old post, but a month ago I bought a Freedom 160, first trip out i did not notice any water in bilge, second trip lightly hit something and put a slight bend in my prop, then after I noticed following boating trips had water coming in issues, about a half gallon of water after 45 mins out the bilge pump i checked my bellows cant see any cracks or holes, just stress cracks on the accordion part of the bellows, i found the 6 nuts holding the out drive to the gimbal housing?, they were 1/2+ turn loose, don't know if water can get in from there?, then into the bellow's
I tightened the 4 transom nuts on the inside of the boat, the one behind the exhaust manifold sucks to get at, the right lower took a turn or more, the rest a 1/2 turn or less.
The boat is in very good condition for 28 yrs old and appears to have been covered or garaged it's whole life, floors and seats are all good
