I know you said that you are trying to avoid rechargeable, but a Craftman 19.2v cordless vac (dustbuster type), coupled with a Heavy Duty Lithium-Ion Battery Pack has good suction and will run for a
long time. The Li-on batteries also hold a charge for weeks when not in use.
