Post subject:  Non-Skid Surfaces : A different idea
I noticed a few threads here on how to clean the non-skid surfaces of your boat, seems Magic-Eraser is the general consensus. But what about painting those areas? I have 4 areas of non-skid (1 on each gunwhale, swimdeck, and bow). I am thinking of painting these areas to match the teal accent color of my boat. Has anyone done this or thought of it before? What type paint would be best?

And yes, I understand that paint may inhibit the non-skid part, but I am tired of scrubbing these areas like mad every week to keep em pearly white.

Don't know about painting non-skid but the Magic Eraser is way too much work and very costly. I use a combination of these two products on my cockpit and cabin non-skid and the combination gets it very clean and white.

Magic Eraser is dirt cheap, goto your local industrual supply store and buy a sheet of melamine foam. It's used for pipe insulation. That's all it is, nothing added.

While I appreciate all the cleaner links and tips (and I will def use em for cleaning), I think I am leaning towards painting those areas. I believe if done right, it will complement the teal/aquamarine stripe on the hull. So that being said, anybody got paint tips, or lessons learned from doing something like this?

Yeah well, my boat ain't a super cool black, dark blue or red, soooo....teal it is. Or seagreen, yeah, that sounds better.

Mine is too. A popular color in the 90's...

How is painting the non-skid going to keep it clean? I constantly have 4 young kids and a dog on my boat and nothing stays clean.

Thanks for the link, unfortunately their deck paint only comes in gray, and I want to match the teal/aquamarine/seagreen stripe on my boat. I actually found a good paint made for siding at HomeDepot, will be applying it tomorrow on the swimdeck non-skid areas. I already applied it to a small area on the ladder lid and so far it is holding up good and looks great. Will post before/after pics soon!

Like I said in my original post, I am tired of scrubbing to keep it pearly white. Darker color will at least not show dirt/grime as bad.

Are you adding some grit to the paint to help keep it as non-skid? Nope, not adding anymore grit, it has enough on the areas I'm painting already... 8)

Got the paint applied. Super easy, just masked the non-skid areas off, applied, waited an hour between coats (sunshine helped), and done.

Will be testing its wearability this weekend. If it holds up like I hope, I will paint the non-skid areas on the gunwales and bow... 8)
