I offered to teach a friend how to wakeskate, after he watched another buddy ride for about half an hour it was his turn. No sooner than he was comfortable telling me to put the boat in gear, the damn lockout rod snapped and we were stuck in neutral. It was pretty windy so I immediately tossed out the anchor so we wouldn't hit rocks. After tinkering with it for some time I was able to pry it out of neutral using 2 screwdrivers which enabled us to get home. Now that I've done some research I found out what it was here: http://www.justanswer.com/boat/51t42-th ... s-170.html I've discovered no one has the OEM part (at least new anyway). I found an aluminum replacement on eBay for $89. I do not want to spend that on a part that was originally $6. Would you simply boat without it? Do you know anyone who will sell me the OEM part (even if used)?

I would search ebay and craigslist. That's a pretty generic control unit for VP used in pretty much every boat from the 90's til early 2000s and if you want a more updated look you can even switch out to the newer style:

I've searched Ebay and AZ craigslist locations with little to no luck, I referred to my OMC stern drive shop manual and realized it really only addresses the engine, I pulled the following text from the user manual that came with the boat:

A start-in-neutral-only feature which prevents starting in gear is included.

Also, the side mount control has a neutral lock button to prevent accidental shifting.

So I may ride without the lock especially if I cant find a suitable replacement between now and my next adventure.

remove the rubber boot, there's a small phillips head on the face and there's a allen set screw inside the diameter that I believe is #3 metric

some locktite super glue (not to fix, only to hold in place while I try JB weld on the inside of the cracks, if that doesn't work I'll try to bend some aluminum flat stock and JB weld to the plastic body and have a DIY lock, if even that doesn't work I'll simply go without as I tested the throttle and it is very stiff to move from neutral to gear even without the lock mechanism

you have to love the universe, I've long believed that if you put good out, good comes back. I was recently contacted by a boat dealership in desperate need of a winch and immediately, all I had in my inventory were my 2 personal winches and against my typical stance, I sent them one of them and they gladly paid for it, after the event they were so impressed they asked to send it back and have me build a custom branded winch for them, since they are a Four Winns dealer I asked if by chance they had the lockout rod, sure as shit they did in their old inventory and he's sending back with my winch!

well the lockout rod they sent me was not the right one :( I've simply been boating without the safety feature since my last post, sometimes my greatest ideas come only when the original problem is completely out of my mind as this was the case a few days ago, I was watching a commercial then it hit me, I could use some marine grade epoxy to strengthen my broken rod, the best part is, I already had the epoxy! I filled it in making sure epoxy bridged all the cracked areas, a day later and it is super solid! I am going to re-install it and hopefully it will not break again!

The other glue that works great on that king of plastic is 3M Structural Adhesive, it's also a 2 part epoxy product.

Well I finally broke down and ordered the aluminum rod from ebay. The seller and I went back and forth via messages for months and he finally gave me a little discount. The only challenge I have is that the wires tend to short out inside the housing so I drilled a small hole and ran them externally which I am not a big fan of.

Eventually if you're keeping that boat, replace that old control with a nice Teleflex CH1700, it about 100x better than those old controls and you will never have any doubt what gear you're in....a little pricy but worth it if you will have the boat for a while....
