No Chris, thats exactly what my wife said. I only took a few with my cell phone. didnt think of any before pics... the red was deffinitly very hazy and the upper white was chauky cause I didnt buff the top last year. the lower hull always looked great cause it sits in 90 % shade in my driveway on the side of my house between the neighbor

Ok I am going to highjack this thread a little. I took Neutrons and jdpber advice and decided to get my baby clean.
I didn't have any fancy tools, just and old buffer and some 3M...



here you can see a before and after



not sure if you can tell in this pic...but the 3M made my Red bleed into my white so I spent a good bit of time just trying to keep the red out of the white.



in the end she came out beautiful!


then I decided to hit the floors with some softscrub...ok I should've done that first



wow! cleaner than the day I bought her!


oh and I replaced all the switch covers.

Several of my switch covers look the same - it must be that the desert heat and sitting under a dark blue cover turn the boat into an oven....I replaced the first couple of switch covers the other day and it makes a world of difference like you can see in Chris' picture!
The old switch covers were "rubberized" - the new ones are hard plastic, so I doubt that will happen again.

Yep vegas heat, not only that but that rubber would melt onto everything! I had to scrub it off the seats, the dash, my clothes and hands, and the floor. But she looks so much better now that its done. It was a lot of work with that cheap buffer and cheap bonnets..in the end I did most of it by hand. A shurhold is in my future for sure because I want her to stay this way. Will be ordering new cup holders, new vents, my name decal and new letters this week (would have already but doing my civic jury duty...again!).

So any suggestions for the rub rail and rail trim? I mean to get them looking good as well.

Just want to thank netron again for encouraging me to buff out my baby...it's been over a month and still everytime I tell someone she's a 1996, they are shocked and I hear "She looks brand new!" ...

Love to hear that.

Thanks again...shurhold in my future for sure. I'd like to do this 3 times a year at least.

I have been using a Shurhold D/A polisher and a Makita polisher for a year or so. Here are some observations:

Shurhold D/A
Much lighter and easier to use

Impossible to burn through a finish, you can stop it with your hand. Too much pressure while polishing will stop the rotation.

Very good for light compounding or polishing or getting into small spaces with a smaller diameter foam or lambs wool pad.


Makita 9227 (or similar)

Much heavier and cumbersome to use. Gotta use some muscle to control it.

Makes quick work of heavy scratches and sanding marks.

Great for use with large areas.


Pads and Compounds

Best results are from using the right combination of pad and compound.

Foam pads are softest and used mostly for polishing but also for compounding.

Lambswool pads are more abrasive and used for compounding.

I have been using Farecla pads and compounds as well as Shurholds Buff Magic and Polish/Wax. I am going to try the 3M chemicals. Search for 3M Marine Recommended Finishing.

I found that Shurhold polish/wax did not last very long, I am now trying Collinite wax.

Don't forget to wax after you polish.

I love mine, I did my 09 Tacoma a few weeks ago just to put some polish on her and she looks great. the paint was already like new so it was way faster than waxing by hand.
gonna wax my boat with it also next week. Saves a lot of time..... I want to use it on everything, hell I may even buff my whole house with it....he he

Hello I have just bought the 3M 9006, which is the best pad i need to use, polishing pad or finishing pad, i have a meguairs buffer

I've buffed with some light compound a few times in the last few years on my Red/White '93 Sundowner. She was pretty beat up when I bought her 4 years ago and I can get her to look decent but it never seems to hold for a whole season (especially the back side that faces the sun). I do wax after also.


Has anyone ever dealt with Polyglow restorer? I'm curious about: how well it works? ease of application? whether the white will yellow? etc...
