Just noticed that the 2 bottom screws on my swim ladder on my horizon have been completely stripped like someone huge just pulled on the ladder and bent it pulling out the bottom screws. Tried to tighten back in with no luck as I noticed the whole ladder is slightly bent outward!
I took the ladder off for now and just put the screws back in as I need to bend the ladder back!
Any ideas on what type of an epoxy to put in there to get the screws to hold again? Sorry if the topic has been brought up before. I tried to look up swim ladder repair with minimal results.
Thanks in advance for any advice you all have.

Post up a pic of what the ladder looks like, I fixed something similar on my '88 H-200. My boat had some square nuts 'glassed into the wood inside the swim platform. 2 of em rotted out. I wanted to use those fittings you use to hold a bolt or screw in a sheetrock wall (molly bolts that have to flip open) but there was not enough room inside the swim platform for it to open. So I took 2 of them, mounted them to a piece of aluminum angle stock with pop rivets, drilled holes for the screws to pass through the alu, and slid it in the swim platform while my son fed the screws (machine screws) through the ladder and outer swim platform. This was much stronger than what they had there originally because its a continuous backing plate the whole length of the ladder mount inside the swim platform. When the other 2 rot off I'm doing the same thing.

The is the best I can do with a pic for now. Sorry not to savy with this site.
The dirty part on the bottom bar is where it sets against the hull, this is where the screws were pulled out. I bent the top 2 brackets that hang on the swim step so it will seat rite again.
My question is what do I use to secure those 2 screws back in. I'm afraid if I use epoxy that if I ever need to take the swim ladder off again it may not come off or do even more damage to the hull?
Thanks Lou
Nick

Did they use wood screws or machine screws to secure that to the transom? If it was wood screws it's easy. I'd fill the holes with epoxy and let it cure. Then re drill the holes and make sure to bed (seal) the new screws with either 3M 4200 or BoatvLife Caulk or Seal. Either one is a good sealer but is removable.
If they are machine screws it's more complex because there would be a fastener glasses into the transom that you'd have to replace. That's what I had to do in the swim platform. The way I did it was much stronger than the factory method (aluminum backing plate spreads the load out).

It has stainless screws. I figured I would need epoxy but what are the fasteners that you mentioned? Are they like mollies in drywall? Where do I get them? Thanks....

Never mind I see what your saying now. I have wood/threaded screws not machine screws.
So you recommend filling the hole w epoxy then drilling it out and applying sealant. That's all
Any special type of epoxy or is Home Depot good enough?

Lou,

Job is done. I'll let you know whether or not I was successful after the spring. It sure felt strong to me sitting there on the trailer. Thanks again for your input.

Nick
