Cripes, a spammer spamming the spam thread? Robotic software run amok.

How about noting the user's IP address and blocking it?

And how about implementing an approval process for new users and their first posts? It's the only way I've ever been able to reign in spamming on the many mailing lists and forums I've moderated. Hold back anything from anyone new until it's clearly an on-topic post from a real person. Yes, this delays a new user asking for help, but better that that allow spammers to run wild.

Scott,

How would you feel about having a very select few others on here help moderate and manage the board? Perhaps this would help take some of the burden off you?

Thanks again for what you do.

I made the offer a while ago too.

I've had lists and forums with several moderators. This to allow picking up the slack and to have different opinions involved.

The best advice to give is if the message is merely objectionable to you and not totally out of bounds, leave it for one of the other moderators to deal with. Better to let someone else handle it than letting your own opinions start wandering into censorship territory. Nothing kills participation faster than overbearing censors hacking up or deleting posts/users.

But I tell ya, nothing works as well as first-post moderation. Don't let anyone new post until their first message is clearly on topic. This immediately kills hit-and-run spammers, especially ones looking for nothing more than to play link spam SEO games.
