Ok....after being behind the boat in the water, I can tell you that I am very happy with my decision. I can really get some decent sound when floating behind the boat now.

Now if you would just pull the trigger on that platform

Steve - I really like that! So I take it they are mounted facing the rear of the boat?

Joe...probably wont happen. We are dead set on a cruiser...and hoping for the end of next season to be the right time, on the right boat. I dont mind a few stereo upgrades along the way to keep me satisfied, but going all the way with a platform for $1500.00 more just doesnt pencil out for me.

Yes, each pocket has 2 speakers in it, so two are facing the rear, two are facing the front. Boat has a total of 10 speakers....8 Polk's and 2 10" JL subs.

Hey guys (who have replaced in boat speakers with polk DBs)

I got in the boat on the weekend and looked at how the stock speakers are mounted... a nut on the back side of the speaker.
How the hell did you change the speakers out? Did you remove the cubby panels to get to them?

None of mine have(had) any nuts on the back of them.

I've never seen nuts on the inside to mount them. Usually just self tappers.

I tried to back the screws out and I didn't get anywhere, they just spun. I tried righty tight and lefty loosey.. :)
Both just spun.

Then I felt in behind and there is a little nut behind there that spins with the turn of the screw.

Don't know about the access on your boat, but with some contortion I was able to get my hand back and around to be able to get hold of the nut (don't really like the way that sentance sounds, but oh well...). If you have to drill new holes anyway, then maybe self-tappers would be OK although I don't know that the wall thickness would be sufficient for that.

Point of fact: If I could get behind my speakers, I'd install nylock nuts on all the fasteners vs. using self tappers. Have to tighten them every other outing. :(

I had that problem. I used a small wrench and wrangled my arm in there from under the storage area and over the top. It wasn't easy. I replaced them with self tapping screws, problem solved for next time.

For the record (just a plug for the amps I am using)...

I ran the hell out of our stereo at Party Cove yesterday. I am saying, nearly full tilt for 4-5 hours. The amps got quite hot, but never shut down....remember I am running 8 Polk's on a 4 channel amp. Even after runnning it that hard for so long, my boat started right up, with no trouble...didnt even get close to running a battery down.

I am certain most of you have never heard of Treo amps (I know I never have), but these things are work horses and clearly...very efficient.
