I know I'm pouring some gas in a fire here, but I really can't decide between the two speakers here. For those of you who have heard both, which has better bass, and which for clarity? I loved the Polk's I had in my car, however I can buy almost two sets of Infinity's for the cost of one set of Polk's. I know both are highly recommended, but I have little information from those who have heard both. I imagine that there is probably a bigger difference in sound due to setup (enclosure, power, ect) than the speaker itself? I really am an audio quality geek, however I know a boat is the worse place for SQ. I have been leaning towards the Infinity's, but I don't want to wish I spent the little extra every time look/listen to them (because if they are noticeably lower quality I will, because I'm that type of person). I will be driving them off my Fusion 700 head unit for now, but another amp will be in order soon.

So subjectively, which do you prefer, and why? Also the bass response is important to me so I can hopefully avoid buying a sub, and when I'm anchored I would probably have a sub off anyways.

Thanks in advance!

Mm651um are a waste of $$. The standard mm651 sound way better. Totally different speakers (Um cheaper). The UM are equal to DB651. All polk are marine rated. MM651 are equal to infinity 621m.

The UM cost more cause they have marine in the name and are sold to OEMs

As stated by Ric, don't bother with premium audiophile ranges in marine applications.
The Polk's generally have a far superior tweeter than the Infinity's.
Given a 6" coaxial will only ever give you treble & mid, this is a huge selling point.
Seriously consider the Polk DB691's if you are not going to run a sub. A 50+Wrms amp will make them come alive!

I actually have some DB691's in my garage from my last car. I was thinking of throwing them in somewhere because they were nice.

I think I'm about 80% leaned towards the infinity's, so keep the feedback coming!

Did Ric really compare the MM651UMs with Db651s? He couldn't be more wrong. If that were the case everybody would have the UMs for $100 bucks a pair. The MM651UMs are the same speakers as the reg MM651 except with a higher marine rating. Polk speakers are all marine rated the UMs are just higher rated and specifically for marine use. UMs are silver and the reg ones are black. UM stands for Ultra marine. They are completely sealed in the front to keep water from entering and the back is extra protected. You can tell in pictures UMs look a little more heavy duty on the back side. Other than that the specs are the same and way higher than the Db651s. Check the Polk Website for specs. The UMs can be a little more expensive than the regular MMs. Sonic Electronics has both for the same price $150. I personally liked the UM cause of the silver grill. I like the look of them better. All i know is that you can't go wrong with polk.

Mm651 are 2 ohm speakers. Mm651um are 4 ohm speakers. Spec wise they match db651 perfectly. They are nothing like the regular mm speakers.

MM651UMs will blow the DBs out the water.

As quality sound is extremely subjective, go to your local audio store & demo both.
You may deem the crappy $50 Sony Marine speakers to sound the best...

All depends what's driving them. A low amp crappy head unit will sound amazing with cheap Sony speakers and horrible with MM polks. You can't expect great sound without a good amp tuned correctly.

That bring said a good head unit will sound good with Polks or infinity without an amp until turned up really loud. If you don't make your ears bleed volume wise as long as you have a quality head any speaker will sound good

Sorry Ric, but your Google education has mislead you, again.
A speaker's sensitivity (measured in db) is what will deem how efficiently it plays from 'X' wattage.
The higher the sensitivity, the 'louder' it will sound from the same wattage.

Lower sensitivity speakers will sound clearer at lower volumes when compared to higher sensitivity ones. Usually.

In the end all those numbers mean nothing. A good sounding speaker is a good sounding speaker no matter what the numbers are. Just make sure you have the appropriate wattage to get the volume desired cause clipping/distortion sucks.

I'm not trying to annoy you, but what you're saying is blatant, misleading nonsense!
For the record, Thielle & Smalle Parameters/ spec's of any driver can supply the educated user alot of information about it's sound & enclosure characteristics.
