I have the Sony CDX-M60UI (marine unit with some water resistance) with 4 speakers. Everything working fine and we pull up to a little place for snack and drinks. Heavy rain storm comes through for about 45 minutes. The door over the radio compartment was not closed, but the removable face was not super wet (some drops) and when you flipped it down to where the CD goes, dry as a bone.

The radio does not appear to come on. Nothing seems to work on the face plate (fuse is good). However I hear static from the forward port speaker. Nothing seems to stop it unless I shut the batteries down.

Any idea's?

You could always try the trick I use on my cell phone or iPod when it accidentally takes a dip. Put the faceplate in a bowl of dry white instant rice for a few days. That draws out moisture out of the internal components. Its saved alot of wet electronics of mine. Might not fix your problem....but its a cheap and easy first step to try.

Do you think it is the face plate? It did not get soaked. The radio is on the lower part of the helm and recessed. I just did not have the plastic door closed (was 90 and sunny when we got off the boat). I will for sure give the rice a try (have done it with the wife's old iphone that took a dip in the pedicure bowl).

I can tell the head unit has power as the button to eject the cd light turns on and off.

The only marine stereo to hold a NEMA IP rating is fusion. That Sony stereo doesn't have a NEMA IP rating, its not water resistant any different than the radio in your car.

Thanks Ric :( I had a feeling, but was hoping someone had another idea. This is the second one of these (last one the flip out would not sit correctly and kept cutting out) so I guess its time to change it up, but the harness is Sony Plug N Play and makes it easy.

I hate to be a nut swinger, but the kenwood marine I had in the H180 would shut off saying water detected and not turn back on for a good few hours if any water hit it's face.

If you're setup for Sony just get a radio holder with a cover.

Last year, I somehow managed to drop the face plate from my sony head unit in the lake. I managed to pull it back out before it took a trip to the bottom. What I did was take it apart( only a few screws off the back) open it up and let the sun dry the internals for a few hours. Put it back together and it worked fine as before.

I am grabbing the boat this afternoon. If the radio is still doing the same, I will definitely rice it and take it apart. If it is shot, I guess the Jambox is going to have to come along for tomorrow as I am going to upgrade to the Fusion or the Sony CDXH910UI Marine.

Once again for the 20th time ric is forgetting to mention the Alpine stereo....
Do you work for Fusion or something?
The CDA-118M undergoes strict marine testing, including intrusion protection and salt fog tests to ensure performance on water conditions. Testing includes being subjected to a jetting water stream at 3.3 gallons per minute, and the unit must stay water-tight for 3 minutes at a distance of 10 feet. For salt/fog testing, the unit is placed in a chamber to withstand water with %5 sodium chloride (salt), sprayed at a rate of 12ml/hour for 24 hours. The CDA-118M is IPx5 rated and ASTM-B117 certified

I took the face plate apart. There is some corrosion on the circuit board which is behind the volume know. Sprayed some electrical cleaner and letting it sit overnight, but not holding much hope.

Unless a radio is NEMA IP rated it's not water resistant. Fusion and that one Alpine. That's it. The rest are just car stereos. Usually overpriced and a few generations behind.

On the Alpine, I don't know. But I "have to" agree with Ric on the Fusion. Its a sealed unit just like your GPS or VHF. AND ID SOUND GREAT TOO!!
