Just on my boat today, and the helm and cockpit stereo remotes weren't lighting up, had no text on the display, but they were both controlling the radio.

I don't remember it being a setting as they would always lift up when the cockpit radio was on. I'm assuming it's just too the freezing temps? I'm in cold storage.

An LCD screen will indeed be slow to react when cold. Normally one would see something though, depending on the type of LCD. That being said, if they are supposed to light up and don't, then you got a problem.

If memory serves, there are 2 cables to the remotes - possibly one got disconnected behind the stereo?
I believe that the multi-pin unilink connector handles the display and the 3.5mm (headphone jack) cable carries the control signals. I would be suspicious of the big y-splitter that the unilink cable probably has coming out of the back of your headunit if neither remote is showing a display.
Disconnect/Reconnect and see what happens.

Just to update this, my last trip up to the boat it was substantially warmer out. Remotes light up just fine :)
