Post subject:  Add 12v (USB) outlet to glovebox in 2008 H180.
Has anyone added a 12v outlet to your glovebox? Looked under there yesterday hoping to find another small fuse block for the myriad of stuff under there (Stereo, Satellite radio, etc.) So I will need to run it from the starboard side under the dash. Just wondering if anyone has done it, and how you ran the wires.

The 12v outlet is actually a dual USB power outlet. That way I do not have to worry about getting my phone wet when charging, and don't have to carry an adapter for the phone in the boat.

This is what I am going with, the rear is set up for waterproofing.

I really can't halp you on the wires. BUT, I did swap out the 12V outlet in my cabin for the dual USB socket. Works great! Now when not on shore power, the wife & I can charge up our phones on just the USB cables.

I was looking into one of these as well. They do draw a very small amount of power when not in use so keep that in mind if you don't use your boat often and don't have an on board charger. I didn't install one yet but I opted for a 12 volt receptacle and a dual outlet usb adapter so I plug it in when I need it and then I have an extra 12 volt outlet.

I was pretty sure it did not - but will have to check it. I thought the only one that did had an LED which this one does not....


And now looking at the information it states there is no draw unless something is plugged into the outlet. The question is - do I trust the product literature written in haphazard English? :?

That USB socket is cool........but, I didn't want to limit my options so I went a slightly different route to achieve the same thing.......plus, you can't beat the install time! :mrgreen:

My main thought was to have something dedicated instead of the dash 12v. As it is, If i want to inflate a tube I have to unplug the phone and adapter, set that aside, plug in the inflator, then reverse the process when I am done. This way I have a 12v in the dash, the USB in the glovebox and phone out of any moisture issues, and eventually a 12v nearer the transom.

Search ebay for Marine USB. Lots of different choices, the one I purchased was $15, but there are others with a dual USB and a standard 12v, a Dual USB and voltmeter, etc. Now that I look at my options I am considering the USB that I have and getting the dual hole faceplate - then adding a waterproof SPST switch to control power to the USB.


Now if i can just figure out how to mount dual M134 miniguns to the bow and starboard, silence the engine, paint it flat back....

West Marine states parasitic draw is 15MA. Very small but not zero. It would take a long time to drain a battery....

Unless you had a crappy battery or charging system. I usually have a maintainer hooked up when it's garaged so the draw would not be too big an issue, and will eventually also have a dual battery system with a switch....

More projects. More money.

It will take approx. 138 days for that thing to drain a single marine starting battery to the point where you might have problems starting.

Good news is, you have a battery cut off switch that kills power to all the boat's systems except important things like bilge pump and radio memory. So unless you install it on the wrong fuse panel, when you turn your battery off like you should be doing after every time you use the boat, it won't drain the battery.

IIRC, my 12V outlets are switched via my key. Not sure if that is typical or not, but may negate the need for a dedicated switch.

i currently use the same plug.

I am though adding a dual USB outlet above my switches next to my depth sounder to have a better reach to the iPad.

Just FYI - I checked and the ebay one is the same as the West Marine. It's $15 shipped on ebay and $25 via West Marine. Mine was shipped and delivered in 5 days.

Good deal. West Marine is a rip off unless you need something right away. I just posted for the specs.
The West Marine near me has the defender.com catalog on the counter since we are pretty close to the warehouse. You have to ask for a price compare on almost everything. Defender is another 40 minutes away so it saves me travel time. Yamalube I used to buy was about $15 a gallon difference. :shock:
