Right now I have the stock Clarion XMD3 head unit and speakers, no amp or subwoofer. I plan to replace the head unit to a newer bluetooth head unit, add an amp and add 4 new speakers. Depending on what I decided to go with and cost I'll either be adding a subwoofer now or in the not too distant future. Depending on the amp I go with initially I'll probably need a second amp for the subwoofer.

My thought is to put the amp in the storage area behind the help, up near the top of the helm wall. So the question is, how do you run the RCAs from the head unit to amp? Is there an easy path without having to rip the boat apart?

On subwoofer, I don't see any great placement for the subwoofer. It looks like the factory subwoofer is placed under the controls. That seems like a very shallow area so I would think that would limit the subwoofer options. The other option would be under the helm near the feet, but that hole would be right in the middle of the storage shelf. That would require the shelf to be modified or removed. However this option would all for a sealed box and a larger driver.

Let me know if anyone has done similar installs and what route you took.

Thanks!
Steve

There are 5, 6 and 8 chnl amps from Kicker, Wet Sounds, Arc Audio and JL that will drive 3-4 pairs of in-boats and a woofer. If you plan ahead, these amp are great solutions for NOT having to come back later and run more cabling and find room for another amp.

I went with a Kicker 5.1 amp mounted in the storage behind the helm. I was able to run the wires through the ski locker and under the bathroom--up to the head unit. I did a 10-inch JL sub in a sealed box and put it in the lower storage behind the helm. I have been very happy with the setup.

French, I sent you a PM about your setup yesterday. Do you happen to have any pics of your sub setup. I'm curious how you did your sealed box. Is the driver actually mounted to the fiberglass under the help, or is it just sitting in the storage area? If it is just sitting in there do you just open the seat/lit when you want to listen?

Do you know how long your RCAs needed to be from the head unit to the amp?
Also, how did you run the speaker wire from the amp to the speakers? All through the starboard gunwale?

I searched and I don't have any pics of the install. I can try to grab some--but unfortunately it won't be until late July. Here are a couple of links of similar installs. Good Luck!

I am asking this without going out and looking around, but when the amps are installed in the helm storage area, where are you running your ground to? Is there a good contact point close by or are you having to run your ground all the way back to the motor?

I would run it all the way back to the battery. Otherwise, I noticed distortion. You can buy the proper gauge wire at Home Depot or Lowes for whatever length you need from their bulk reels. Much cheaper that buying "stereo" wire--and it is all the same. Wire is wire.

Thanks, I was wondering about grounding a Fiberglass boat. In a car it's easy to find a good metal ground surface.

No to grounding amps to the helm BUS and no to engine block. Ground to battery ground post. B+ should go to the main battery switch output post.
