Update: mobileblackbox is the one I ended up ordering. Now comes the funny part. Me in my infinite wisdom decided to cut the power cable supplied with the unit and hardwire it to my fuse panel. I connected the red wire to power and the black wire to ground, pressed the power button and "POP" along with some sparks and smoke. (think Napoleon Dynamite "IDIOT") I have sent mobileblackbox a request for replacement explaining what I did and begging for mercy. We'll see what they say. I guess the 12v cig lighter adapter does some kind of power down conversion, if you will.

Well, finally got out on the water this weekend and with some friends in another boat and so far this thing sucks. We tried various frequencies and various power levels but it always sounded like crap in the recieving boat. So far I am not happy and would not recommend this product to others.

This is the one I have. I don't use it much any more because I prefer the direct ipod connection. But if memory serves, depending on the channel it would get picked up by 2 boats in either direction on a raft up. Its made by monster cable.

Hey Cincy thanks for that. The reviews on Amazon look really good for this one and it's about 1/5th the price I paid for the mobileblackbox piece. I'll probably order this one and try it out.

I ordered this one and it should be here this week. I'll re-post after trying it out.

Sorry I did not see this thread earlier, I use a CCrane FM transmitter at work to broadcast my XM radio throughout the shop, works very well and for quite a distance. For what you want, it would work very well.

The unit only broadcast 20-50 feet in original state, but there is a website and instruction on tuning it up, I get 150-200 feet out of it with good results in a machine shop environment (lots of electrical interference). On a lake I think it would work very well.

I've only tried the Monster FM transmitter once out at PK and it worked better then the mobileblackbox for sure, but still not great. I'm gonna try again with it tonight out on Lewisville. Hope it goes better.

So I tried again with the Monster transmitter and no better. I can't seem to win on this one. Had two boats rafted up with me and one of them sounded better then the other, but still not good at all to me. I think I'm gonna have to give up on this one unless someone has a rock solid suggestion.

Guess you didn't like my suggestion. We have at least 6 radios all tuned in to my transmitter in the shop, with in a 100' distance and sounds good.
I know if you are rafted up, this unit will work great. I was going to buy another for our boat, but I don't raft up with any one any more. We take guests on our boat, along with our 3 jet skis, boat is where we all hang out between rides.

When I leave work I have tuned into the station I am broadcasting in the shop, I can pick it up in the car, that through 2 cement walls and at least 300' away from transmitter. Now at that distance it is fuzzy, but I was impressed it transmitted that far.

No not that at all. Just getting frustrated trying to find a good solution. I pretty much wasted $150 on the first one I tried. (partially my fault) but the unit sucked. And $25 for the second, which was better than the first but still not acceptable. So I'm rather hesitant to try another one. Looks like this one sells for about $70 and another $30 for the car kit, so that's another $100, so at that point I'd be at almost $400 trying different fm transmitters. I appreciate the suggestion Powell. I still may try it.

I does run on AA batteries if you did choose to not 'try' the car kit until you know it works. Or goto radio shack and buy a cigarette adapter for much less than $30

I feel your pain, I went through the same thing trying to find a good FM transmitter for the shop for our XM radio.
