I know, I should not even talk about the thought of freezing temperatures yet, but......

Do you guys remove your LCD TV(s) from your boat over winter lay up? This question is assuming where your boat is laid up the temperatures frequently drop below freezing over winter.

In the Great Lakes area, our boats are typically out of the water from November thru to April each year.

Well, at some point, everything will freeze! But the liquid-crystal paste used in LCD displays has a different specific gravity than water, and its freezing point is much lower as a result. The only reason I would remove the TV is if I was worried about theft. I have an LCD in our garage that has been out there for 3 years straight, and temps below zero have never had an effect on it.

I'd prefer to leave our two LCD TV's in our boat over the winter months provided there was no real risk of damage from freezing temperatures. Your winter temperatures in Michigan would be real close to what I would experience.

I have always removed my GPS unit from the boat over the winter months.

Has anybody had an LCD TV left in their boat over winter fail from being subjected to on/off freezing temps?

I've left mine in the galley cabinet for the past 5 years with no ill-effects. Same deal with the E-80 chartplotter. I take the TV in the forward cabin out, if only to avoid leaving an easier-to-steal item on board. I don't know how cold it would have to be for the displays to fail. Now, I would not go turning them on while it's freezing cold outside. I have kept them powered off the whole time.

The advice I was given was wait at least until temps are above 50 before turning it on for the first time. This will give the liquid crystal time to get at better temp
