Looking to replace the existing 4 Sony 6.5's in my H220. I had narrowed it down to the Polk db651... however I found a thread that sounded like someone had to drill new holes. No big deal on my front two but my back two would be a job. Anyone have to drill new or do they slide right into the existing four holes? Another set of speakers instead? I see some Alpine and Kenwoods at about the same price point... would buy the Infinity 612M but I'd need to drill with them too. :(

btw... need a new head unit too. :) I don't need the best... just something that's better than my Sony that's wigging out.

Thank you!

i just replaced my sonys with the polk db651 and you need to drill new screw holes. alpine marine speaker require about a 1/2" more depth and new screw holes. i didnt have the depth so i went wiyh the polks

Thanks Jeff... I'll take a closer look at my rear speakers. It sounds like the Polks are clearly one of the best buys if I can get them in without to much hassle.

I replaced my four cockpit Sony speakers with the Polk DB651 speakers last month and had to drill new mounting holes.

Just set the new speakers in the existing speaker holes, mark the new mounting holes and drill. I guess the only difficulty would come in if you don't have easy access to get your drill in. In this case you may need a drill that has the ability to rotate its head 90 degrees.

I understand not wanting to drill........

Mike.

If you can physically access the area to drill, drilling the holes is a piece of cake. Just use a small bit to
start the holes, then follow with the correct size bit for the screws you are using.

Yep... the drilling isn't the issue, it's not being able to get at it without removing the side panels. I don't mind tinkering with this stuff... but don't want the extra work just for a speaker replacement. :)

Thanks CG!

I installed a pair of Polk 651's last week... HUGE upgrade... will order a second pair shortly. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good speaker without breaking the bank (paid $60 shipped). :D

All the best!
Steve

Careful... you might be stepping on my toes... that's funny and I'd think the same watching a guy put money into a boat he was "selling." I don't know if I could let our H220 go if I had to. If I ran out of money, I'd sell my cars first so our family could enjoy sitting in the boat still (while parked in the garage with no where to go).
Speakers had to go either way... front set were absolutely terrible. Glad they're replaced...

I had my factory Sony's stolen from the boat while in the dock. They did me a favor.

I replaced them mid-summer with the Polks and have been very satisfied. I paid $58 a pair off of Amazon. They required that I re-drill the holes, but not that I gain access to the rear. I did it all from the front.

I've got a second pair that should be on my step tomorrow. It'll be a job to get the rear/side ones re-drilled but it'll be worth the effort. Excellent speakers for the money. I paid about the same... $59 shipped. Glad to hear it worked out for ya... hate the hassel but an OK ending. Best wishes!
