I think you are fine with the 2 stock locations in the bow... the 2 stock locations on the platform firing back. If you could find a way to fit 4 more speakers in the main 'cabin' area - for a total of 8 -- that's the real deal.
Went to dealer and measured. I think that I can squeeze 2 polk MM521's on either side of cooler about 2 inches off the deck. trying to balance / fill out the sound in the back part of the cockpit. I'll take some pics as I progress.

Which amp would you use to do 4 speakers in cabin seating area and 2 on swim platform. trying to come up with a system for less than a grand, but would still sound nice.

Alpine amp that I would use is the pdx 4.100m

very solid. Would have to tie cabin speakers together off of 2 channels, leaving the other 2 channels for the swim deck

good luck. well worth it!

Was there a wiring harness that you used on your stereo? if not, did you take notes as to what went where? Your setup is great and I am going to copy it but I am not too much of a stereo guy so I need help.

Did not take those notes. It was fairly straight forward if I remember correctly. The headunit comes with its own harness.

here is a wiring diagram from the Alpine headunit manual. hope it helps.

good luck you will love the improvement.

I will take lots of notes, Luvsmysl242 was helpful to me in picking out components as I wanted to stay under $1,000. I will be starting install next week or the week after and will also take pictures of before and after. Have not installed a car stereo since my college days, since it is easier to work around in a boat, I am thinking this should not be too bad.

I ended up with the Alpine CDA 118M head unit ( loved the dual volume control feature ), the Alpine PDX 4.100M amp, and 6 Polk Audio DB651 speakers. Need to pick up some 14 gauge speaker wire and my total will actually end up just under $900. Now I can buy that swim platform everyone says I should get as well.

Well... 1yr later and much enjoyment out of my system, I was reminded why I made the change from the Sony HU. Last weekend I decided to put the old sony into my in-laws Searay Bowrider. I went with 4 polk speakers and the alpine 4 channel amp to help with the sound. The Sony was a pain to get hooked up correctly. Can not get quality sound out of the speakers because of their EQ and other "sound enhancing" technologies that they have in it. Navigation of the Ipod is horrible. Etc..etc...etc...

Wow even my wife said she now understands why we changed out our "perfectly good" stereo after using that "perfectly good" stereo again. She thinks that it is a POS too.

Long Live the ALPINE!!!!!!!!!

ok, 4 years into this and still loving the setup, but getting the itch to do some more tinkering to my setup.
Any suggestions of new "technology" to take this to the next level? Call me crazy, but you know that you are never done modifying your boat.

You will never beat Alpine's technology for simplicity and sound quality.
I would personally look at buying a D Class mono amp (>500 watts RMS) and have an enclosure made for a 12" driver.
It will transform the low frequency extension! 8)

New tech is really pretty stagnant since your upgrades from what I can tell. Your setup is solid. Besides upgrading the HU and going with the d class amp, I can't imagine changes making much difference unless your swapping speakers.

Speaking of speakers, my boat came with those same cts602 and Sony HU. I kind of thought the speakers sounded like garbage so picked up a great deal on infinity marine 652 6.5" for the rear firing and cabin. Yeah... BIG difference even just being powered by the stock head unit. I've always liked infinity speakers... Very balanced. Eventually I'd like to cut in another pair in the bow and power with a decent amp. Stock bazooka sub is OK, but lacks the low end frequency response of a well powered sealed sub.

Just an FYI, those Alpine PDX amps are class-D topology and the PDX-5 is a hybrid 5 chnl amp with a dedicated mono sub woofer chnl.

What new? Blue tooth and wifi. Head-units that you can run through your phone via an app.

Where is the sub located? If in an enclosure locker, I would look to install it in a manor that allows it to radiate into the cabin. This is like doubling the wattage and woofer goes from a boat shaker to a bass maker.

Does the system have any type of zone control to allow for independent control between the transom and cabin speakers?

Larger speakers like the Kicker KM-8, Wet Sounds 808 or JL 8.8 would make a huge improvement in the mid-bass output. Down side, you would likely need a 12 woofer in the 500-600 watt range.
