Hey guys-

We have a 2011 H210SS with the stock sony head unit and stock speakers. I like the head unit, but the speakers are a little weak when you want to really get into the tunes. I don't want to add the weight of an amp and sub set up, so the question is what are the very best speakers I can get that will give good base and clarity? When I turn op the volume to about 25 or so, the sound really takes a nose dive. Im not terrible concerned about price persay, I would like to get the best sounding speakers without adding amps and subs. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the Polk 651 are good. Do I need the 651s (I guess the (s) is for slim mount) or just 651?

I'm on my second boat with the polks and I love them I have the regular 651, not the 651s and haven't had ant tribe with depth. As with any speaker you will get better sound with an amp but even as a direct replacement, the sound difference is huge.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I did read in other post from the past that the polk were really good, and a lot of people used them. Just didnt know if there was something a bit better even. I think the polk 651's are for me it sounds (pardon the pun). Im not sure if I would need the slim mount or not?

I replaced my Clarion speakers with Wet Sounds SW-65 ($160 p/pair installed). I have not heard the Polk speakers and know from prior entries on this website that Polk is less expensive so I cannot give you a comparison. The Wet Sounds are clear at all speeds, love'em.

Polk - best bang for the buck
Wet Sounds - Great speaker at the 150-175/pair
JL Audio - best marine speaker - 300/pair or so

Of course, these are just opinions...

I'm shifting gears and trying some Kicker speakers on my motorcycle fairing -- they should be here next week. I wonder how they'll compare to Polk's which I have already heard, and the Kenwood's I have currently (but are not happy with at all).

If these go well, I may try some kicker speakers on the boat... I have polk's currently.

Too bad. $99 a pair there, Only $59.24 at Amazon

With the money you would have saved you could have almost paid for a third pair of some even better Speakers

Price aside, you will be happy with what you got.

I saw that at amazon, crutchfields did give me 50% off the second set of speakers. Plus I purchased a few other things that were better priced at crutchfields vs other online stores. So all in all it equals out and Im happy.

Directionally, it's a great move. They'll sound much better than the Sony's. The db's were a good choice in my truck. If you're like me though, you might find yourself maxing out the head unit while cruising around and then start looking for a good place to mount an amp.

Do you have an amp in your boat? Are you running a kicker box (do they still call them that)? If you were to suggest an amp, what would it be, and how much? How large? simple 4 channel? I don't know much about the kind of stuff. How difficult would that be to add.

You will add an amp and a sub the next day after you play the system without it. I'm not gonna recommend a particular brand/type of Amp, I know better than to do that on this board. It's like asking what is the best type oil to use in your boat.
Enjoy your new speakers.

One of the important thing to remember when choosing an amp is to match the RMS watts of both speakers and amp channels. So lets say your speakers are 4 ohms and 100 watts RMS then choose an amp that is 100 watts RMS at 4 ohms per channel. 99% of all marine speakers are 4ohms so it only gets a bit complicated if you decide to connect speakers in series or parallel.

Now for the sub, again make sure to match the RMS and ohms of your sub to the amp and it will sound great. Now adding multiple subs can be a little tricky especially if the subs are Dual Voice Coils. I suggest you take that time to read up on this before buying your components.

Good ohms calculators: http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp

Speakers cam in today, so why not install them today. Here are some pics, nothing fancy or anything you all haven't seen before.Image

Had to relocated the holes, but overall it was a piece of cake. The speaker on the port has a slight vibration that I cant get to stop. I've tightened and un-tightened the screws, remover speaker and put additional gasket behind it but to no prevail. Besides that, it sounds awesome. Tons more power and thump than those OEM speakers offered.

Hey Jim, looking good. I don't have an amp yet, just swapped the speakers like you did. No sub either.

I'm happy with the sound at anchor, but am getting greedy for more power for the music while cruising. Get it out on the water see what you think.

DC Gold, http://dcgold.com/ in my opinion makes the best marine speakers you can buy. They are waterPROOF. You can hose them off and they are very loud and sound excellent.

I run a set of n9.5c and a set of n5c in my U17 off of an Alpine PDX5m and they're excellent. JL Audio makes very nice speakers but are a bit overpriced in my opinion and definitely not waterproof.
