I just thought I would post, in case anyone has not seen these. They are used in Spa's and are completely marine ready. Made by JBL . These speakers are a neat idea for rear facing sound when you are in the water. They are much cleaner install than 5" holes in your stern, but are limited to their output by their small size. They can be mounted in the gunwales, just like a recessed rod holder, and will pop up when activated. 60W power handling and 3 speakers per unit. The also rotate any direction.

About $75 each.

Nope , they are not the greatest of all time Polk DB 651's, nope you won't be able to hear them two lakes away and nope they are not for everybody, but a clever idea IMO.

Of course! I just finished my rear ski locker speaker project and these appear. Cool idea. I actually think these could work really well. Thanks for sharing.

Between you me and the fence post, I did not buy Polk's, mostly because everyone else wanted them.......... :wink:

There are several differnt retailers that carry them.

As far as the Polk's go, I'm in the same mode as you are. I suggested them on a boating site to others about 4 years ago, and they were a big hit there. Since everyone seems to drool over them, I decided I wanted something different for myself, and chose the Infinity 612M's.
Compared the Polk's and Infinity's side by side on a couple of like boats, and the 612's outshine them IMO. The blue cones and chrome (non removable) grill in the Infinity's turn some people away. They were a nice fit and look for our boat. But the price of the Polk's is hard to beat for the money and overall sound quality.

Here are some 2" one's, not JBL though.
If you look at the bottom of the page, there are other shapes like oval, etc.

Might be a cool way to a few to a boat.

Has anyone tried something like this? It looks like a great solution to adding music that can be heard off the swim platform. But, I wonder if they have enough power to project music that can be heard from a short distance. Sure would be convenient to have them in the rear gunwale in a nice, clean installation. Best part is that it won't interfere with the cover, and doesn't require an ugly bolt-on speaker box, or big holes in the rear of the boat. I like the concept!

Cool idea. I wonder how much weight it can take with people stepping on the gunwales to go up to the bow and back.

I'd be more worried about how well the mechanism that raises them deals with the harsh marine environment. Anything with surfaces eventually has gunk collect on it; metal, plastic, wood, whatever. Then there's the issue of the plastic getting brittle just from UV exposure. Gizmos like this seem like a cool idea until real life comes into play. It's hard to be a plain old cone-type speaker with grille for all around utility and price.

I could see them being more useful popping up from a deck of a hot tub or something like that. There you might want to be able to focus a lower level of sound inward toward the listeners. But out on a boat? It doesn't seem as useful.

Still, clever looking gadget.
