Post subject:  Video camera's?

I been looking for a new video camera for taking boating video's. I'm interested in the HD Hero 2 and wondering if anyone here has any experience with it? Any other reasonably affordable camera's out there you can recommend that are water resistant/waterproof? I've been shooting with a Kodak z18 which is ok, but I feel it's a little lacking while shooting action.

GoPro was everywhere in the snowmobile community this winter. Everyone loved them and they shot great video.

Looks like a camera that you could strap to yourself while skiing. I shoot pictures from the boat so I must have a minimum of 4x telephoto to see who the person is 70 ft behind the boat. Not sure how good this model would be for tubing, wake boarding, etc?

Don't try to reinvent the wheel, get what works. GoPro.

Don't think you can go wrong with GoPro. I know a few people with them and they produce fantastic videos. It looks like the "motorsports" version comes with a suction cup mount too (mount to windshield/radar arch, etc). I might need to get one of these for myself!

As far as GoPro's go... I love these guy's videos.

If you want to video people 70ft away and you want good quality. Pick up a digital SLR that takes HD video where you can swap lenses out and use one's that have lens based stabilization. Here's a deal. You can get better lenses....

The Nikon does good video too, and as far as user friendliness goes, Nikon is easier to use. The key is the lens. That's what you pay for in any Camera/Video camera. That's why some are $200 and some $5000. Digital SLR's kinda cheat that system now since they also record HD video, you're not stuck to the lens that came on the camera like a traditional video camera. $500 Digital Rebel T3 or $3000 5D mk3 they can both produce near identical results. It's all about the lens. Crappy video/picture quality has nothing to do with the camera, they're all very capable of amazing results with the right glass. Megapixels means nothing.

Plus the bonus of using a DSLR for video, is you can also take pictures :) Two birds, one stone.

Took my Canon HF10 on safari last winter and the 10x optical zoom on it was incredible. Managed to see animals nearly a kilometer away in close detail. So don't ignore camcorders with actually decent lenses. But yes, the rest of the advice makes sense. The most important thing will be image stabilization. You may want to consider getting a monopod to help brace it. It's basically just a one-legged tripod, and it saves your arm from getting tired holding the camera up all the time.

Hi Jeff,
Shortly after posting that question we came across a great deal we couldn't pass up at Costco. It bridges the gap between our digital SLR and our Kodak Z18. I really want to upgrade our video equipment, but for our last big trip we knew we would be doing a lot of hiking and wanted a waterproof camera that would fit in our pocket. We ended up with this:

It takes good pics/videos and is waterproof. I still plan to get a Go Pro, but this will work for now.

Go Pro is releasing Hero 3 camera next week.... It is smaller and more powerful than current models.
Time for us to replace Hero 1 to Hero 3 :D
