Post subject:  VHF antenna location

I just bought a marine radio and antenna for my 99 Sundowner 205. I've got the radio mounted right of the driver seat below and rear of the throttle. Is there a rule of thumb as to the location of the antenna? I'm thinking on installing on the left side of the boat just forward of the passenger seat. Or should I just install on the right side near the radio. The owners manual says to keep the radio at least 3 feet from the compass and the antenna should be mounted as high as possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thats true. I would also keep it 3ft away from the GPS antenna too. Other than that, you just don't want it in your way. As in docking and handling lines. Digital Antenna makes a good 4' one thats 4.5 db gain. Most 4' ones are 3.0db & the 8' ones are 6db gain. So 4.5db gain is great for a 4' antenna!
