Factory Sony unit with 6 pre-set buttons in the center and round display to the right all other controls to left. Not sure of the model number right now but it looks the same as a CDX-H910UI except for the color. Mine is silver.

I don't mean that it goes off for a second while the starter is turning. Rather, everytime I turn the key from the off position and I start the boat I always have to hit source to turn it back on. Often times I'm in acc position (turned left) with the radio on and then I turn to the right to start the boat. this also causes the radio to turn off.

Is there any setting I can change that will make it go back to it's previous state after starting. if it was on then it comes back on, if it was off then it stays off?

Your ignition switch is going bad. Mine did the same thing it was driving me crazy until I figured it out. I would have to pull the fuse to get the radio back on.

Is this new behavior? Did it ever work correctly? My 2008 has had this behavior since the day I bought it.

Sounds like it's wired wrong at this point.

It should have a constant 12v on the yellow with everything off and red should be switched with the key.

I agree with ric (not too often, but often enough :) )

It should turn off while cranking (low buss voltage), but should come back on in the previous state/mode a few seconds after releasing the key. You may try putting it on a relay, instead of being wired direct through the ignition switch. This way if it's a poor connection in the ignition, you have eliminated that.

FYI, I found LOTS of wiring errors in the first season of my new boat....little stuff, such as the 12V recepticle wired backwards. I wouldn't be suprised if something else was messed up at the factory on other boats.

I did not buy this boat new but it only had 22 hours and zero modifications other than a prop that was completely wrong, and as the other 2 owners of the same year/model have stated it is normal from the factory.

it's so annoying though that I thought someone might have discovered a solution by now and I was fishing for one. I'll likely just put up with it rather than start rewiring things. I'm handy with electrical stuff I just hate it.

I'm familiar with car stereos and the difference between the yellow and red power wires. It would seem though that if having the key in the off position were cutting power to both rather than to just the red(switched) wire then when I leave my boat in the driveway for a week with no power at all to the radio then it would forget the time and presets but it does not.

Find the model # of the radio, it sounds like it's just a POS. A good sony marine radio is like $150

in that manual (pg 12) I noticed a setting for Auto Off. doesn't sound like thats going to do it but I'll give it a try and report back.

Well, I tried the Auto Off setting and it did not work. When I turn the key from acc to off the radio goes off immediately. The 30 sec delay on the auto off only applies to when you press the off button on the radio itself.

What I did discover was that I could turn from acc to run, passing through the off position along the way. the radio did cut off for a second but it then reset and came back on with the radio still on. If you pause for a second or more in the off position then the radio will turn all the way off but going quickly through allows it to stay on. Not really a fix though.
So it appears that there is not a way to prevent this through any setting on the radio

The only hope for this (that I've been able to find, anyway) is the occasional post where someone does the SIRIUS fix (dedicated, always-on, power to sat receiver) and they mention that it solved their "power off" problem as well. Of course, the price may be the loss of free SIRIUS, and may just be me misunderstanding what they meant...

It is a royal pain at times though.
