Man, that IS cool. I imagine the torque is real nice too, eh? The only deisels I've experienced are the Atomic 4's on sailboats.

Diesel power is different than gasoline power. Quit being a pain.

That is awesome Graham! In the words of Jeremy Clarkson.... "I'm having a crisis!"

Wish we had more diesel options on this side of the pond.

You are correct Sir, but I think Universal uses the Atomic name on some of their engines, I know I have seen an Atomic plate on a diesel engine on some of the sailboats here. Company merger or something maybe? 8)

Maybe. Awesome engines though. My father loves sailboats the last two he's owned one was an Atomic 4, the other was a Universal diesel. They're all made by Universal. The boat he just sold was the diesel, 30ft Irwin. We estimated range with known consumption it took and if you wanted a slow cruise it had about a 300 mile range on 20 gallons. Insanity for a boat. He could easily have motored from Jacksonville to Nassau bahamas without ever lifting a sail.

I wish we had more diesel options here in the USA. I'd love it if my 215 ssi had a diesel.

Its not that they don't have the diesel options here in the USA its the premium to add the diesel option thats usually ridiculous for a relatively small boat. The Four Winns website doesn't have pricing so I checked out the Sea Ray site. The 280 Sundancer base is $150K, the diesel option is over $43k. The big block option is 16k. The diesel is a tough sell if you don't do a ton of cruising..

The insanity is that volvo charges $30k MSRP for the D4-300 engine without a drive. Thirty Thousand Dollars. I'm pretty sure they could sell it for $15k and still make a profit.

My buddy has a mid 80's 46' trawler with twin turbo diesels. If I remember correctly he gets about 10-11 gph at cruise. Granted, that is about 12 mph, but still that is a lot of boat to push at only 10-11 gph.

Here she is:

That 278 probably gets 5gph when we're getting 12GPH with gas engines. ugh.
