The water at Lake mead is still too cold for my family to enjoy (63 degrees) and I am itching to get out of town for the weekend.
I convinced my wife that Lake Havasu would be much warmer this weekend and we could overnight at one of it's many boat-in beaches.

I have never been there and it's about a 3 hour drive one-way...I'll be dragging my Vista and have two toddlers 5 and 2)coming along...oh and by the way it's Lucas Oils drag boat race weekend there.

Any good advice about where to beach, where to launch, what to avoid?

Anyone want to come along? (702Steve?)

My advice would be to avoid Havasu this weekend and hit Lake Mohave. The lower part of Mohave will have warmer water - you could head out of Cottonwood Cove or Katherine Landing.

I can't give any specific advice on Havasu (it's been too long since I've been there) - last time there, we launched and camped downstream of Havasu City on the Arizona side where the beach campsites had picnic tables and porta-potties with solar powered fans.

Mohave is filled straight from the bottom of Mead...I thought it was always 5-10 degrees colder than mead (surface temp) Although I just googled it and found it to be about the same as mead..

The east side of the Cape on the open Atlantic warms up to about 65 at the end of August (warmest during the summer)....so I would say go and enjoy it. We have a 3-4 month season so would love to have the problem of only 63 in May! It's 46 right now and some have already been swimming!

Seriously, I would love to boat out there some time and look forward to it!

True - it is filled from the bottom of mead, so up by Willow it is COLD water. As you get downstream, it warms up significantly.

Havasu might be warmer, but this weekend you'll have to deal with all the drag boats and all the yahoos that will be there to check them out...

LVChris do not go to Havasu during drag week!! To many people on the water and around town you would worry to much of what's going on around you and not be able to truly enjoy the lake. Also last time I went the water was very shallow and a lot of sandbars if your not familiar with the lake you can get stuck quickly especially with our kind of boat. I would recommend cottonwood cove if you want a change of scenery. Nice launch ramp and new docks if you want to stay the night at the marina. If you head up towards willow from cottonwood there are a lot of beaches but remember the water fluctuates up and down due to being below the dam so keep that in mind if you decide to beach the boat.

BTW we are thinking of going out the night of the 17th till Monday no school for the kids. Let me know if you want to meet up we'll save you a spot!

Thanks for the response, we decided not to go out at all this weekend. One of our problems in the past has been whenever we try to go somewhere other than Callville Bay...we have "issues." Drug her on the trailer out to temple bar one time last year and ran into severe winds and someones launch vehicle in the drink...turned around and drove home. On another weekend we went to cottonwood and when we arrived the weather turned awful and our room reservation got messed up so no room...turned around and drove back home...

So we have had very little...I mean "no" success when taking her anywhere other than Callville Bay (I have ther stories about Boulder ramp)

As for the 17th we may make it out for a night. Are you planning on going to Swallow Bay/Hideaway Cove?

Yes we are going to swallow cove!

As far as cottonwood cove goes you may want to put in @ cottonwood cove and drive the boat to Katherine's landing keep the boat @ the marina and take a cab to Laughlin and stay @ a hotel due to the fact the wife gets sea sick and return to the boat the next day! Something different?!
