What can happen is this:
here because of foolish ignorant politicians, special interest groups and the inability of the public to force change, we are stuck with 10% ethanol gas that benefits no one, but farmers who raise corn.
So...
you put the gas in your tank. E-10 can absorb a certain set percentage of water....when that percentage is exceeded (because of very high humidity, open gas tank vent, water in the gas station's tanks, leaking gas fill gasket) the water drops out of suspension, and winds up in the bottom of the tank. Then you wind up with some ethanol and water in the bottom of the tank. Imagine how well your engine, fuel injected or carbed will run on that when it gets sucked in.

I have been able to use it without problems, I do check the fuel filter for water every year.
The other problem is a practical one, involving the economics of the oil industry here in the US. Alcohol is corrosive to certain metals so the oil companies will not pump E10 gas through their pipelines. So the E10 gets mixed by the driver at the distribution center in the tanker truck. Mistakes are easily made. You can wind up with anything from E10 to E20. And that's the problem. Modern engines can tolerate E10 but not more. Thats been proven by Mercury Marine.
