A marine inboard will last the longest if you run it at about 75% of max revs at cruising speeds. As in, about 3600 rpm. You can go faster up to max rpms for limited time periods but these old school pushrod engines are not designed for sustained 4500 rpm + use.
Usually the max rpm is 4600-4800 the redline is about 5,000.

Another question -

What is the highest I should run the RPM's at? I was getting 34 mph (from the speedo) at 4200 on smooth water, so wondering if it will handle 5500 or should I just stay around 4500?

I know the speedometer can be horridly inaccurate, downloaded some GPS/plotting apps so that I can make a more informed navigational run next time....

Still also wondering about minimum depth I should run as well. I got nervous when the gauge started reading 5 feet....

I had a 3lt Merc for a while, honest little banger. Ran a 17P High Five to give it a decent hole shot. Regularly ran to 5200rpm for 2-3 mins at a time when barefooting, most of the time ran about 4-4500rpm to ski and about 3500 to cruise. Motor lasted a few years and was still strong when I sold it at 500 hours.. and I still see the boat still belting long every now and then. Don't be shy it is not made of glass, enjoy it but... the harder you drive it the higher the maintenance / repair bills, and the better you maintain it the longer it will give you trouble free boating.

Check your boats data sheet for its draft with the drive down, which I recon will be about 900mm / 3 feet, but you can trim up. Once you are in 2-3 feet of water you should be almost stopped anyway about to jump out, so cut motor & trim up.

Oh and you are going to screw up if you are new to boating.. we all did trust me, just take pic's and post them here:lol:

...and use a motor oil intended for that high rpm use, like Merc's 25/40 or a straight 30 or 30. Do not use car based multi grade oils because they will shear down in use.
