I had a problem with the tilt/trim motor on my 1995 Evinrude Ocean Pro 150 hp outboard at the beginning of the season. On inaugural launch of the season in June, motor would not tilt down. Happened right at the dock. Monkeyed with it for 10 minutes and brought it back to the house. Checked fluid, tried switch a few dozen times, up makes a motor noise, down does nothing. A buddy came over and I tried it again and it worked! We tested it 30 times (yes we counted) and it worked without fail. I've used the boat all season now without a problem, and today it happened again. Boat is moored in Long Island Sound for week vacation and after a beautiful day and ride, motor tilted right up, then when I went ahead to lower it an inch, nothing. Checked fluid, tied both switches, at the throttle and on the cowl. Same symptom, up makes normal motor noise, down makes no noise, just the click of the switch. I know there is a manual release, I hope to test to see if I release it to lower it, if they motor will still run it back up. Need to get it back on the trailer to work on itcand trying to avoid a tow from the mooring. Any ideas or thoughts?

Not sure about the OB but my old merc IO tilt motor had desperate cylinoids for up and down. If motor works in up then it would work in down so shouldn't be motor.

Try Google the cylinoids for your model. Mine was easy fix and motor was inside boat....but that was an IO

Of the outboards I've owned this is one thing I have never had to deal with...thankfully.

There is a manual release on the port side, (I think its the port side)... It is a big flat head screw that you turn to "open" a valve...or so I believe.

Of the engines I have had, I've tried to turn that screw a few times just to see what happens. I could never get it to budge, but didn't put the "I have got to make this work" force behind it either.

One thing on the FW hulls they typically make it really hard to get a regular screw driver in there due to the fact that the hull extensions/swim platform comes out around the sides of the motor a bit.

Other than that, I would guess it is a solenoid or electrical connection. I would pull every plug and re-seat everything from the throttle handle back to the engine and in the cowl also.

If that doesn't work it is probably the solenoid/relay. They are mounted under the cowl somewhere. There are 2 one for up one for down. They should be mounted right next to each other. They are little plastic cubes that plug into a base with wires coming out of it. Swap them and see what happens. If it goes down and not up, you found the problem.

I was having a similar problem with my outdrive not working right, just hearing the click of the switch and the drive not trimming up or down. Sometimes it would work fine, sometimes I'd have to keep playing with the switch, and it would usually go up or down eventually. I bought a replacement trim switch and when I remomved the switch to see about replacing it, it started working a lot better (but still not perfect) so I left the old switch on and kept using it. This season it started to get worse and one day at the marina couldn't get it to go up or down at all no matter what, so I had the new trim switch installed and its been working perfectly since.

I ordered the switch from this shop and they were pretty helpful in getting back to me letting me know that I was ordering the correct replacement part.

Thanks for the replies. I learned there is 2 identical relays that power the tilt, one for up and one for down. They just push onto the relay board. I swam out. To the boat this morning to remove the cowl and find these relays. Problem was with motor fully tilted used up, there is not enough clearance to remove hood. On a whim I held the up button and pressed the down button, while releasing the up button. Viola, trim went down! Couldn't repeat it, but got the hood off and found the 2 relays, port side of engine behind air silencer. I swapped the 2, and the trim would now go down but not up. I switched them back and trim went up but not down. Found the relays at Atlantic Marine in Westbrook. Just waiting for low tide and the weather to cooperate to install them, fingers crossed.....
