Thats a very cool project. Good work! I'd love to know how that sounds compared to your typical Sony or Onkyo receivers of today.

Mike, All you need now is an inverter and some LED's and you'll be able to rock the tunes on your boat.

Classic audio..... Nice work Mike.. Not a big fan of Dr. Amar Bose, certainly loathe and hate the current company, but the "Legendary 901" was truly the best they ever put out! Bar none! And like you said, they must be properly equalized, positioned and driven.

I really need to get off my lazy duff and finish my "not classic" speaker project.

I have 24 7" kevlar midranges and 24 kapton planar ribbon tweeters sitting in thier boxes, patiently waiting for the right time, to be married to the 8.5' tall x 16x16 enclosures (Line Array's) designed by John Janowitz of Acoustic Elegance per my request. Once completed they will be driven off my Antique Sound Labs Wave 20 monobloc tube amps (20W RMS per bloc) signal from Parasound Halo P1 Pre.

I will have to start a thread and post some photos of the components for you. I was originally going to construct them with passive equalization, I have all 1% tolerance perfect lay, air wound 16awg inductors, Solen metalized poly audio caps, mills resistors etc. But the more I think about it, I may bi wire them and use an active device like a Marchand or something from Behringer or DBX for the equalization.

I already have the baffles ready (CNC Routed) I just need to construct the sides, tops, bottoms and backs of the enclosures and decide on what sort of base. I will probably finish the cabinets in piano black lacquer or some other single stage high gloss finish. I am not a big wood fan (no decorative wood in my house) so I want something more modern in design. I thought about doing thick granite slabs for the base. Or maybe even super thick acrylic (that would look different).

We already did the anechoic chamber tests on the first production set and the response was very good. There is some comb filtering (unavoidable) but we tweaked center to center distances of drivers to compensate and flatten the response. These things spec out well over 100Db of efficiency. I should be able (if so inclined) to achieve 120+DB far field on modest tube power with almost immeasurable distortion. And all in all, I will have less than 4K into these with active equalization.

I will drive these with Push/Pull Class A tube monoblocs. The amps run a single 12-AX7 on the input stage and twin 6L6-GC’s on the output stage.

Tubes are a whole 'nother world I have not yet delved into, but would love to. Not as you have - I'll never have $4K wrapped up in speakers and no longer have the ears to justify it even if I did have the money. But some tube equipment would be a blast to play with, both in audio amps and RF amps.

Mike,

4K does sound like a lot of money, but considering the time span to aquire all the componentry it's minimal. This is a very on-going long term project that has been displaced many times by many other hobies. The real kicker is, when completed, there won't be any speaker you can "buy" much under 50K a pair that will compete and that was the goal.. True esoteric audiophile level, but with minimal outlay of money.

Tubes can be very expensive or very affordable depending on where you go and what names you drop. Antique Sound Labs is known for very good and reasonably priced tube gear. It's no Cary reference 200 watt S.E.T. but it wasn't 100 grand. I honestly paid $500.00 for both of my monoblocs brandie spankin new in the box.

Try tubes.... they truly are a whole nuther world!

Do those things have Russian tubes in them? In the RF world they've become very popular due to the prices and/or depletion of remaining domestic production.

Mike,

Yes indeed, they come pre tubed with Svetlana tubes.

I was going to "roll" the tubes out, but one of the high end tube dealers I spoke with said honestly, the Svet's are as good as it gets.
