hi guys
I need to replace my trailer winch for my 2005 245 sundowner but i am not sure which type of winch i need to get. Can somebody please assist me as i am not sure on what to go buy when i order one. Do i go on the weight of the boat or pulling power of the winch. I found this one but dont know if it will bolt onto the trailer correctly.

When I replaced mine a couple years ago, I searched online for the make and model of the same one that was on the trailer. Fulton dont remember the model. That wold give you a starting point anywasy as to the pulling power of the original. I wish I would have put on a unit that uses a a nylon stap instead of a cable. I hate the cable, if you dont wind it up straight and even, I can go thru 2-3 cables a season.

I have a 2004 245; I'll have a look at the winch on my trailer tomorrow when it's light again and let you know. The trailer is a UK one, but I'm sure the winch is American ( it's a 2 speed one, with a 2" webbing strap, not a cable).

Any more news as to what caused your drive bellows/ drive shaft to fail? At the end of the first season on the water the original bellows let in sea water and caused some rusting on mine, luckily I caught it in time.

I just checked ( any excuse to go out to the boat!).

Mine is a Dutton-Lainson DL2500A ( "2500 lbs pulling winch"). It is unbraked, there is a DL2500AB model on their web site that has a brake. Also, they do replacement ratchet kits etc at a reasonable price.

Did your strap simply wear out, or are you unhappy with the original winch itself?

I Have booked it in to get repaired on the 24th. They will check if it has caused anymore damage to the engine. Fingers crossed nothing else is wrong.

As for the winch I am happy with it but the winch strap is starting to fray and the winch was rusting. Do you guys think that one on that website would fit straight on. Any idea on how much a factory one would cost. Might be better to go with one of them so it bolts straight on. Graham that looks like a reasonable price. That one would bolt straight on right?

I can't say whether it would bolt straight on. I just had a quick look at mine ( it's light now, but raining!).

It has a series of holes drilled in the baseplate along it's centre line.

There are 2 pairs of slotted holes outboard of the centre line, about 8 cm apart. On mine there is a U bolt clamping the forward end to the box section winch post and a single bolt through the baseplate and post. The slotted holes look as if they will allow U bolts of between 2-1/2" and 3" to be used.

I just realised there is a drawing of the mounting holes on the website, in the manual.
