I posted this under another thread but I figured I would give it it's own thread. Would anyone be interested in getting together and doing something like this? Helping others is something that I am very passionate about and would love to organize something like this, but I need to know if there is any interest.

In Chicago area, the crownline owners do what's called the Chicago Loop Cruise. It's about a 70 mile cruise throught he rivers of Chicago area and about a 7 mile trip on Lake Michigan. There are about 60-100 boats that do this each year. It's a great event. They have the coast guard axillary come out and do safety inspections for everyone that wants one and you get a small decal to put on your boat to certify that you have been inspected (helps out when you get boarded by the coasties). They have sponsors and t-shirts, etc.

Now with a twist:

I feel that my wife and I have been very blessed to be where we are at in life (financially) and I know many of you are as well. I would love to do something along the lines of a get together but do it for a charity. Have sponsors, do safety inspections, do trailer inspections, etc. Have a day long event that involves some cruising, a raft up, everyone staying in a hotel that night. Finish it off with a live band of some sort. Just make it one hell of a party but for a good cause. Everyone would pay a "registration fee" but then the proceeds would all be donated to some charity. Call it something like "Boaters for Big Brothers Big Sisters" , "Cruising for a cause", or something along those lines. I just thing we should all use our passion for boating and get togthers and give a little something back to people who havn't been as fortunate.

Since we are all spread out all over the country, maybe we could do it at different locations around the country on one particular day. Similar to "Aquapalooza" that Sea Ray does but instead of making it an event to just get drunk or market a particular product, do it for the greater good.

If you all think I am crazy just say, "Woggy, shut the hell up." I would understand. I just feel guilty that I get to have so much fun and spend my disposable income on my boat, boating, and booze, and I just think we could channel our passion for this hobby to do some good with it.

Just a thought.

I think it is a great idea. Unfortunatley I may vary soon be one of those without a job as out district is looking at laying off 50 of our 200 teachers. Being a second year teacher puts me low on the totem pole.

If there is a way for me to help out from Oregon I would be happy to.

Woggy, although I wouldn't be able to participate due to distance, I applaud your effort and your sense of helping. I understand where you're coming from and have learned myself in the last couple of years just how gratifying it can be to help those who need it. Best of luck with this initiative.

Reminds me of charity harley rides...

Great plan - I wonder what local boating clubs/yacht clubs might already do? Might be kind of cool to jump on board some of those events!

I will say that the admiral & I make a great habit of donating and helping out for charities and great causes. Linking that to boating would be a very fun event.

Now you've got me thinking of how to go find these kinds of events in our own area!

Well, I am a member of a Lake Michigan boating forum and it appears the wheels have been put in motion. I have generated some interest allready so we will see where that goes. Ideally, I would like to see this event become a national event. Not where everyone comes to one place, but where everyone participates in their local area. It appears that we will probably be doing this for the American Cancer Society, at least that's where we are starting. I will keep you all up to date as the event planning progresses. Thanks for your interest.
