If another vessel is maneuvering erratically, after dark, then there really isn't much other than the spot to help make a safe call on what the heck is happening. I had to do something similar when a small whaler was weaving about in a channel ahead of me. It was a boatload of kids, the spot snapped them right to attention and got them to quit the shenanigans (at least until I passed by).
