Which is why I boat in little lakes.

Great pictures Cap'n.

Thanks. It was like a traffic jam at the beach, hundreds of cars down there to watch the waves. About a dozen guys in wet suits trying to surf the waves, crazy. Sand had blown over the road and a few vehicles were stuck trying to get a parking spot. Went to the marina to check on the boat, it was bobbing around, but secured well. I did have to tighten a neighbors spring line as his boat was rubbing the dock. Not often you see whitecaps IN our marina !

I slept good knowing my boat was dry and inside!

Here is a picture of the Holland Harbor entrance at around Noon yesterday.

Image

For reference, the channel markers have a 4 leg base that supports a square platform, I can walk under it so it is about 6 feet tall. The cement pier is normally about 3 feet above the water. So you can see the wave at the green marker is about 9 feet.

My sister-in-law has a 50' Ocean Alexander trawler at the same marina we use. They had purchased extra fenders and had used every single line they have to tie up their boat. There was a Fleming trawler that broke loose and went forward into a piling, bending their anchor. A 46 Sea Ray next to the Ocean Alexander had ripped loose some dock boards and they were unsure if the dock was still safe to use.

The marina is just inside the channel from Lake Michigan into Lake Macatawa so if the conditions are right the wind, waves and surge are still pretty strong there.

After seeing those pictures I feel a need to listen to a Gordon Lightfoot album.

Looks like it will calm down after Wednesday this week. Need to put the boat to sleep for the winter Thursday when it will be less windy. Not a good day on Lake Michigan tomorrow.

Quote:
Northwest gales to 35 knots becoming west 15 to 25 knots. Mostly cloudy until midday then becoming mostly sunny. Waves 10 to 14 feet subsiding to 3 to 5 feet.

The season is over for us, and actually, I'm glad. It's been one of the worst seasons for boating in my 16 years of boating. Lots of windy days, rainy cold weekends and cool water temps. We will see what next season brings.

Pretty much the same over here too. We will still get in a late cruise, in the next couple/few weeks. I have a lot of car work to do (between broken, just needing maintenance and getting the track car ready for the final track day), so we're thinking of moving our "anniversary" cruise out an extra two or three weeks (after the track day, at the end of the month) and gioing further south.

We'll see.

What's the area south of Long Island like in early Nov.?

Wow, that's crazy! I didn't know the Great Lakes packed that much of a punch.

Hey, good news is there are plenty of homes around Lake Norman, NC for sale and still lots of boating season left!

Ted Turner thought the same thing, this quote is concerning the Chicago to Mackinac sailing race:

Quote:
Ted Turner, though, left a mark of a different kind: In 1970 he reportedly referred to Lake Michigan as a "millpond" and said of it sarcastically, "Yeah, I'm really scared." That weekend his American Eagle was caught in a storm with real winds that reached 60 knots. As one of his crew later wrote, Turner didn't have a storm jib (a kind of sail) on board and at one point thought his mast had snapped. Sailors here, who have never forgotten Turner's insults, enjoy describing his comeuppance. Cried Ted amidst the billows: "I publicly retract anything and everything I have ever said about inland sailing!" Though he finished first, he departed humbled

And I thought Lake Winnebago got rough. Damn. I have been out on Mighigan in 4-5 footers, but only in my boss's 27' Fishing (charter style)boat that is like 10' wide and flat so very stable in rough water. Not to mention it weighs about 8500lbs. helps.
