You're right - being in public has never been private. But my yard is not public property and no one sought my permission to post it on the Internet. Yes, anyone can drive by it. I don't consider that the same as making it available to anyone in the world at the click of a mouse.
What you "consider" and what's the law are clearly two entirely different concepts. Law trumps sentiment. But bear in mind libel and other laws exist to address improper usage of images.

I too have spent my career in IT, and as such, have real concerns about people's privacy. If I were to drive by your house and photograph everything visible from the street including any young children, etc., and post it all over the Internet, you'd have no problem with that?
When people live in suburbs there's not a lot of activity in the front yards. No pictures to take.
As for "all over the internet", what a gross exaggeration. Here's a thought, millions of trees fall in the forests everyday... and nobody hears them. Likewise for the pictures. What's more disturbing is the frenetic pace of voyeurism fueling this paranoia. ZOMG! Someone posted a picture! Run around! Wave your hands frantically in the air! The SKY IS FALLING! Puh-leeze.
But maybe I'm just being crabby.
Yeah, being more visible online is something that surprises people and does seem to make them uncomfortable. Whether it's worth all the frenzy is questionable.
